Leading Off (7/8/08)

1. In hopes of making our energy policy a central campaign issue, T. Boone Pickens launches a media campaign today to promote what he says are the only ways to reduce the country’s dependence on foreign oil: embrace natural gas; develop wind, solar, and nuclear energy; and distribute power rings from the Green Lantern Corps to those with enough willpower to use them and fight evil on the side.

2. Two men accused of shooting a woman outside of Nordstrom at NorthPark Mall have been arrested. I was at Northpark and parked outside Nordstrom on Saturday night. When I went to my car at about 10:30 p.m., the Five-O was everywhere. Just so you know.

3. In Tarrant County news, the City of Fort Worth is expected to be presented with its annual audit. The only problem: it’s the 2005-’06 audit. The 2006-’07 audit hasn’t even begun. City employees have been working until 5:30 a.m. to catch up — which will happen in about March 2010.

I wonder when Pickens will start distributing “I’m mad too, Boone” bumper stickers.

We were at NorthPark this weekend, too, in the afternoon, and counted about 12 po-po inside the mall, and saw one in a golf cart outside on our way out.

Whoa, wait a second…you mean wealthy conservatives are starting to become environmentalists now?!

I thought their most recent talking point memo said to belittle Prius owners, and to encourage war with Iran for its oil. This kind of flip-flopping is really screwing up my equilibrium.

I saw Steve McGarrett at NorthPark. His hair was really, really terrific. A first-rate crime-fighter all around.

It’s not about being an enviromentalist it’s about making money. As Steve Martin said in The Jerk “It’s a profit deal”.

    Has anyone seen this?

Passengers waiting to board a delayed American Airlines flight from Miami to LaGuardia booed the crew when they arrived at the gate over an hour late. When the gate agents threatened to cancel the flight because of the booing, some of the passengers apparently became even more heated and perhaps a bit inappropriate although by no means threatening. The crew then retaliated by walking off the job, leaving all the passengers stranded overnight. The report linked above has more information.

I’m sure the crew had a good excuse for being late but their petulant response was inexcusable. Yes, the passengers who were abusive, profane etc. were also in the wrong but I believe (and actually hope) that we will be seeing a lot more of this. American and the other airlines have reduced flying to a horror. Frankly, there are times when they deserve a little verbal abuse and rebellion from their customers. They treat their passengers like animals and they are learning that sometimes the animals bite. Maybe a little yelling and screaming from all the passengers as a group (rather than from the odd irate crank at the checkin desk) is the key to changing the airlines’ behavior. Nothing else seems to work.

A bit off topic I know, but item 3 mentions Tarrant County, and, um, American is based there.
