It’s only a matter of time, according to Bob Moser in his cover story for the July 21st edition of The Nation. Despite the gushy enthusiasm of his prose and some errors (Rick Perry is against the border fence), Moser makes some good points, mostly when quoting Republicans. He also writes about how Dallas Democrats, financed by local trial attorney Fred Baron, took over the county in 2006 by building a grassroots operation of “phone-banking, precinct-walking, direct-mailing and vote-targeting.” That’s a good story, but it has been better reported elsewhere, as in this 2006 Jason Embry piece in the Austin American Statesman (which, oddly, I can’t find on the Stateman’s site; the News isn’t the only newspaper with search problems).
The most glaring error, though, has to be his description of Zúbar as “a warm, woodsy drinking hole in East Dallas.”
Unless by warm and woodsy he means weird and douchey.
I dunno. The small government/Christian Right pact of the GOP does not appear to have survived the post-Soviet world. Once the Bush card is no longer in play will the Democrats be able to keep their working poor/union base united with pro-Immigration Latino’s?
Sure man. If enough Californians, New Yorkers and other out of staters keep moving here, it will be Democratic (not cowboy) Chic sooner than later.
Texas Democrats will win by doing one thing: finding good candidates. Democrats were running against a fractured Republican field in 2006. But no big name Democrats decided to run that year. The GOP won by default. It’ll happen again in 2010 if the Dems don’t find a solid slate of well-funded candidates.
As for the Presidential race, it’s hard to imagine Obama winning Texas since a fair number of Hillary supporters in the state now say they’re backing McCain. But… McCain is not well-liked here. He’s seen as a moderate by Texas Republicans. They don’t much like him for his jabs at President Bush in the 2000 race.
If Obama really ran hard here, he could force McCain to spend money here. I don’t think Obama would win, but he could keep McCain from putting as many resources into other states as he wants. On the other hand, Obama may view that as too risky a move if he’s got a shot at winning Florida or Ohio. To me, it’s a gamble worth taking for Obama.
@ Andrew – It survived long enough to have been one of most decisive issues in the last election.
Republicans will win Texas, but it will be a lot closer than it’s been in the past. If you want to know why Republicans are having such a hard time lately, just go talk to any right leaning people you know and i guarantee the one thing they’ll all do is differentiate between conservatives and Republicans. Texas Republicans just won’t stand up for conservative principles anymore, but it’s not just them, it’s Republicans nationwide. As long as Republicans are the party of big government, out of control spending and open borders, they’ll lose. Republicans didn’t get the message in 2006, we’ll see if they get it this year. An interesting anecdote from the Democrat primary, i saw tons of Obama commercials during NASCAR events, even during the truck series and qualifying sessions. Seems like a smart move right? It is, except these commercials were “out of Iraq now” ads that were clearly designed for the Mtv college crowd. Conservatives may not be happy with the mis-management of the Iraq war, but retreat and defeat won’t appeal to them. So it’s not just Republicans that are out of touch with conservatives, Democrats are out of touch as well. And that’s probably the only thing keeping Texas a red state.
If Chet Edwards is really the VP nominee, he will win his district and carry Texas for Obama.
“If Chet Edwards is really the VP nominee, he will win his district and carry Texas for Obama.”
How’s that grass you’re smoking?
As long as Republicans are the party of big government, out of control spending and open borders, they’ll lose.
It’s not the Republicans who are going to lose in 2008–it’s the Conservatives.
As long as Conservatives are the party of “unless you are a white, hetero, Christian, American-born, successful male, you are going to h*ll” they’ll lose.
Texas–along with CA, NM, and Hawaii–is now a minority white state. Making enemies of non-whites and immigrants is not a good game plan for the future of Repubs or Conservatives in Texas.
On the other hand, as a Yellow Dog, I encourage you to continue with that strategy.
It’s always enjoyable to watch a democrat rant about white males and Christians while accusing others of intolerance. While you may think that hispanics demands for Americans to look the other way at illegal immigration as a requirement for their vote is something to applauded, or at the very least coddled, most Americans don’t agree with you -
The enforcement side of the debate is clearly where the public passion lies on the issue. Seventy-two percent (72%) of voters say it is Very Important for “the government to improve its enforcement of the borders and reduce illegal immigration.” That view is held by 89% of Republicans, 65% of Democrats, and 63% of unaffiliated voters.
So you continue with your strategy of telling the American people they have no say in who enters their country, and i’ll continue with my strategy of telling them that they do.
I’m sorry that Diahh seems to be dyslexic. Intolerance is a hallmark of the Repubs and Conservatives, not the Dems, and the Hispanics are learning that fact…in droves.
I said nothing about illegal immigration. As opposed to Diahh’s utopian wish, there are already a large number of Hispanic CITIZENS here in Texas. Threatening to send their non-naturalized parents and relatives home, after they have spent the last 10–20 working and paying taxes–that’s just cruel and inhuman.
Democrats want stronger borders like everyone else. We’re more concerned about potential terrorists trying to come here for nefarious purposes. It’s the Repubs that have chosen to make the Hispanic the poster child of illegal immigration.
And it’s the Repubs who have shrugged their shoulders at Osama Bin Laden running around free, while trying to deport Jose’s grandma.
Oh, i see. So when you responded to my comment about open borders with the typical accusations of racism and dire warnings of alienating non-whites that accompany all opposition to illegal immigration, you weren’t referring to illegal immigration at all, but just using open borders as a springboard to launch into the trademark diatribe about conservatives being nothing but breeders, crackers and Jesus freaks that we’ve all come to expect from tolerant, diversity lovin’ Democrats. And your obvious anger at those opposed to illegal immigration isn’t because you support illegal immigration, you’re just angry that those evil Repugnants haven’t caught Bin Laden yet. Sorry for the confusion. To make up for it, here’s a quote from Christopher Hitchens i think you might enjoy -
More and more I find that those people are the real enemy intellectually. There’s no dishonesty like liberal dishonesty, just like there’s no intolerance like liberal intolerance. There’s nothing they won’t excuse and no excuse they won’t deploy. Their piety is a big aspect of that. Brilliantly exploited by Bill Clinton. Currently being exploited by Barack Obama. Cheap mediocre piety and sanctimony is their stock in trade.
I Think nothing about illegal immigration, you were not referring to illegal immigration at,all but just using borders as a springboard to launch in to the trademark diatribe about conservation being nothing but breeders, crackers and Jesus freak that we have all come to expect from tolerant, diversity loving Democrats.
