Another Reason To Celebrate Living In Dallas

The household income of the average D Magazine reader is $224,000.  To enjoy a similar lifestyle, here’s what our readers would have to make in five comparative U.S. cities:

  • New York: $396,474
  • LA: $375,168
  • Miami: $331,176
  • Boston: $307,540
  • Chicago: $304,759

Of course, in Houston they’d only have to make $206,662. But who wants to live in Houston? (Hat tip: AM)

  1. Jeepers… I didn’t know I was 150k below average here! Now I *really* feel inadequate.

  2. Under what possible set of circumstances would a $224,000 Dallas lifestyle be enjoyable?

  4. I know, right? I’m going to go back to my double-wide and quietly read “El Dia”.

  5. Promise me you don’t start fondling your .357 — or think that a pillow in the oven is a comfortable place to lay your head.

  6. I guess there are no school teachers that read D Magazine. That is, unless they collect gold bars in the summer.

  7. No worries. Like monkey god alluded to, I’m still better off than a lot of Dallasites.

Pay SLR no mind. He’s a pretender.

    Monkey god:

There is no doubt that teachers are underpaid — and professional athletes are overpaid. Regrettably, that reflects what our society values.

Frankly, though, I doubt Wick’s figures. There must be either a methodology problem or a skewed or statistically flawed sample. Average reader household income of $224,000 is simply not believable (but, obviously, a valuable “statistic” to report to one’s advertisers), unless, of course, Mark Cuban, Ross Perot, and Gerald Ford are all subscribers.

  10. “Median” as opposed to “average” maybe?

  12. Median would be even more unbelievable.

  13. Question Marty…If our readers don’t make that much money then to whom is your column targeted?

  14. Danielle:

Presumably, one doesn’t have to be well off to enjoy an article about the foibles of the well off. Otherwise, only the very rich or the very poor would appreciate Edith Wharton. And only pirates would appreciate Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island.”

But to answer your question more precisely, my column is targeted to the editors of Vanity Fair.

  15. Marty, just so you know: several years ago, when we wrote this story, Tom Hick canceled both his subscriptions (to the office and the house).

  16. Tim:

As usual, I fail to see your point. Is Tom Hicks now an editor of Vanity Fair? Are you talking about his income skewing Wick’s subscriber “statistic”? Are you suggesting he wouldn’t appreciate my columns because he’s way, WAY richer than I?

Or did you intend to insert this in the comments section to your police officer libel post, where I also commented?
