D Magazine Through the Eyes of a 9-Year-Old

For the past two days, my son Burke has been forced to come to work with me because his normal gig has taken the week off. Burke will be a fourth-grader next year at the greatness that is Hexter Elementary. Students there are required to keep a journal over the summer. Here is Burke’s entry (unedited) from yesterday:

To day my camp is closed. So I went to the famuse D Magazine with my dad because he works there. At D Magazine they make magazines. And my dad seams that he is the comandore of his floor because he is always going around his work helping people when they get stuck. I think my dad does a good job of it to. But the person who owns the whole work and the boss of every body is Wick. Wick is a very funny, smart, guy. I think he is good at his job. And that was what it was like when I was at my dads work.

Without spell check, I could do that too, and I am way past 12th grade. Is there a Wick check?

  • Chris

Did anyone else hear a sucking sound?

that kid knows how to get a job…

It’s just a matter of time before someone at the Morning News does a story on Burke.

  • Christine Rogers

A forewarning from Mama Bear: commenters of this blog entry better tread lightly.

  • Allan

    Perhaps Burke = Marty Cortland?

  • mm

I wish my comandore helped me when I get stuck.

  • JS

No mention of the D Mag interns? That would be the highlight of my diary entry. In fact, can I come to work with you, Tim?

  • John

Not to mention a new XBox from Dad.

  • Drew

    Brilliance.

Make his journal entries a regular post this week. Could be good reading from the mind of a 4th grader.

  • Idunno

    “famuse”, pure genious.

“It’s just a matter of time before someone at the Morning News does a story on Burke.”

Alan Peppard is already on it.

    Best. Post. Ever.

  • GuiltyBystander

If the DMN does a story on Burke, will it be better written have fewer typos than Burke’s journal entry?
    My answers: Yes and no.

  • Gadfly

To heck with the typos. He is a good writer for his age. Long sentences, big words, flattery, and snark. He’s a prodigy. He’s a little mini Tim.

  • Paul

Burke = Wick Allison Starter Kit?

  • IFB

Well Tim, next year Dr Pruit, Fr. Gregory et al can work the Cistercian magic on him too. You are going to give him the same opportunities you had, aren’t you?

  • Tim Rogers

IFB, naturally we have not ruled out Cistercian. For now, though, we’re very pleased with what DISD is doing for him at Hexter. Being able to send him to a high-performing neighborhood school has been a real treat.

But the prospect of inflicting Fr. Gregory with another Rogers boy does sound delicious.

    Unedited? What about this part?

“After leaving work, my dad took me to The Old Monk, he calls this his “editorial meeting” or at least that’s what he told mom. Dad and uncle Eric drank about 10 pints each and uncle Eric got sick at his stomach with the flu. Hopefully he feels better. Dad let me drive home, again.”

  • Peterk

speaking of Uncle Eric, did he teach Rogers fil any card tricks or how to make a straight?

  • MT

Looking forward to Burke coming to daddy’s weekly poker game. He can shout “clock” to Uncle Eric, see Uncle Randy get sick on the couch, talk with Uncle Robert about who he interviewed and what movie he hates, get very afraid of Uncles Shane and Todd, get girl advice from Uncle Freeze, learn money management from Uncle Simmons, learn how to bill people while playing cards from Uncle Straight E, figure out exactly what Uncle Matt really does for a living, hang out again with Uncle Adam and his new son, and help serve drinks like his “cousins” Zach, Max and Brooks. He will get cookies and brownies from Aunt Sherry though.

  • Michael Davis

I can’t top Marcus so I won’t try to be funny here. Classic comment.

Give young Burke his own blog. Those kids are worth a zillion hits once they find out they’re on the net.

Most I have read in years, Kudos Burke for keeping me interested.
Hope the rest of your summer is awesome.
