The Prius Chronicles

I was a little taken aback by some of the negative comments occasioned by my earlier post about my impending Prius purchase. On the day I am to take delivery of the car comes this story in the News about how popular the car has become in North Texas (I bought from Freeman Toyota because, as Terry Box points out, they aren’t charging that $5k premium; too, a friend in the biz gave them high marks). As I drive home today in my new car, that smile on my face will be, as commenter Matt called it, the “sweet, sweet smugness that comes from driving one of the ugliest cars on the road.”

    Congratulations, Tim. I know you can handle “smug”.

  • Puddin'Tane

    Since Tim is married and doesn’t have to consider picking up women then it doesn’t matter whether he drives a ****block or not.

  • Rawlins Snob Repeal

    No, Tim, you are NOT driving the ugliest car or even the ugliest Toyota: I have driven for 5 years not one but two SCION XBs (the original ones, not the new 2008 model that gets 10 MPG less than my 2005 and 2007). So trust me, as a charter member of the 4-cylinder 40 MPG Club, your car looks like a reclining goddess compared to mine which is lkened to a fetal position meth addict. But hey……. it’s all good. Congrats.

    Alot of women are turned on by a man who is forward thinking and concerned about the earth and who isn’t consumed with trying to get laid. Remember, real beauty is what’s on the inside (of the car).

  • Puddin'Tane

    Along with a carseat and the family dog…

  • Gadfly

    How about some picts of you driving the car. What color is it? Is there enough HEAD room for a tall guy like you?

  • MIssing Dots

    So I guess Tim’s car will PRIus Robin’s legs apart.

    “According to research conducted by the US Department of Energy and General Motors, nearly nine out of 10 women (88 per cent) say they’d rather chat up someone who owns the latest fuel-efficient car versus the latest sports car. It gets worse. Eighty per cent of American car buyers would find someone with the latest fuel-efficient car more interesting to talk to at a party than someone with the latest sports car. And, more than 4 out of 10 (45 per cent) 18- to 43-year-olds say it’s a fashion faux pas nowadays to have a car that’s not green or environmentally friendly.”

    Isn’t the Prius today’s version of the Ford Pinto? As Puddin’Tane said, good thing he’s married already.

  • Eric Celeste

    None of these earth-friendly women were at Villa-O on Friday. That’s for sure.

  • Stella Rogers

    Daddy, your new car scares me. What if we run into anything larger than a shoebox or heavier than a shoebox full of heavy stuff?

  • Jason

    Wow. Someone needs to tell Leonard DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts,
    and Natalie Portman that their Prius’ are inhibiting their chances at getting laid.

    Don’t they realize that the Chevy Tahoe is the all American aphrodesiac?

  • Rawlins Enquiring Mind

    Jason: DMN METRO coumnist JACQUELINE FLOYD proudly drives a Tahoe from Flower Mound. That may or may not be the marital glue with fellow DMN editorial writer and ‘What Global Warming?’ conservative guardian Mike Hashimoto.

  • MIssing Dots

    Global Warming is just God’s way of making it easier for us to get to the oil in ANWR.

  • Chris

    Congrats Tim, your car will leave more waste on our planet, than any other midsize.

  • Jason

    @Chris

    You must not have read the earlier thread. Tim didn’t buy his Prius to save the planet, he only bought it to save gas. Plus, it holds its resell value better than the average GM. Not everyone who buys this car is preaching for Al Gore. But with that in mind…since you’re obviously concerned with waste and appear critical of others, what measures are you taking to conserve (other than buying a midsize Accord), and how can we best apply them to our own lives?

  • Jason

    For others concerned about waste, the website hybridcars.com has a very good FAQ section that addresses most of these questions. The “dust to dust” comparison which outlined the energy costs over the life of different models of cars was already debunked as heavily flawed by the Pacific Institute last month. To answer the common battery disposal question, the following is noted on the site:

    How often do hybrid batteries need replacing? Is replacement expensive and disposal an environmental problem?

    The hybrid battery packs are designed to last for the lifetime of the vehicle, somewhere between 150,000 and 200,000 miles, probably a whole lot longer. The warranty covers the batteries for between eight and ten years, depending on the carmaker.

    Battery toxicity is a concern, although today’s hybrids use NiMH batteries, not the environmentally problematic rechargeable nickel cadmium. “Nickel metal hydride batteries are benign. They can be fully recycled,” says Ron Cogan, editor of the Green Car Journal. Toyota and Honda say that they will recycle dead batteries and that disposal will pose no toxic hazards. Toyota puts a phone number on each battery, and they pay a $200 “bounty” for each battery to help ensure that it will be properly recycled.

    There’s no definitive word on replacement costs because they are almost never replaced. According to Toyota, since the Prius first went on sale in 2000, they have not replaced a single battery for wear and tear.

  • Chris

    @Jason

    I am driving the same POS ‘96 civic, which gets better gas mileage than the majority of small cars that are produced today.

    And you trust Toyotas stats on the batteries?

  • Bethany

    Are there others available to refute them? Do you have some links?

  • DFWMediaGuru

    Hey Jason you might want to wake up: Leonard DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman can get laid because they ARE Leonard DiCaprio, Harrison Ford, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cameron Diaz, Jessica Alba, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Brad Pitt, Julia Roberts and Natalie Portman.

    P.S. They probably got their Prius free from Toyota so schmucks, er staffers, at D would then want them as well.

  • Jason

    Pacific Institute study: http://www.pacinst.org/topics/integrity_of_science/case_studies/hummer_vs_prius.pdf

    Here’s the FAQ section of hybridcars.com put out by Bradley Berman: http://www.hybridcars.com/faq.htm

    Considering the site touts new Ford and Honda hybrids, I think he’s not a shill for Toyota.

    @DFWMediaGuru

    So with your argument, Brad Pitt and Leo DiCaprio would have trouble getting laid if they were driving a Prius and weren’t movie stars.

    Something tells me your wife would disagree.

  • monkey god

    Why are we fighting? Buy what you like and can afford. If you want to save the world buy a Amish style reel lawn mower, put a metal roof on your house when replacing the old one, don’t buy bottled water and go the speed limit.

  • Dallasite

    I’m going to buy a second H1 just to sit in the driveway running. I may use one hummer to tow the second hummer, while it’s running of course.

    Because that’s how I roll…
