Money sentence in Star-Telegram draft story today:
Josh Howard, taken 29th in 2003, is the only first-round pick this decade currently on the Mavs’ roster.
In said story, Donnie Nelson suggests those waiting for a big Mavs splash shouldn’t get too excited, partly because last year’s second-round picks (remember Reyshawn Terry, summer league fans?) have a chance to make this year’s roster. In the DMN, Eddie Sefko asks us to keep in mind that DeSagana Diop could be resigned soon. Meanwhile, the only person having the sort of “Let’s Play Jr. GM” fun we like to engage in is Mike Fisher, who says if the Mavs moved up to No. 6 or 5, they could target Eric Gordon (yu-uck) or Joe Alexander (hmmm). Fun for having starts at 6 p.m.
I’d only want Eric Gordon if, instead of overtime, tie games were decided by which team has a player whose head looks the most like Charlie Brown’s. Then he’d totally be in my rotation.
Tim MacMahon likes Courtney Lee at 28 if Memphis trades out of that spot. I think he’s wrong and CD-R will still be there then:

Zac, I like your thinking. That’d be much easier for me to rig, and definitely plays to my inner Vince McMahon.
Skin has some interesting thoughts. It involves three domino-ing deals, so who knows if it could ever happen.

As long as it’s not Nick Fazekas…I mean Kevin Love or the Lopez twins, I’ll be happy.
How about giving up less and trying to get Roy Hibbert. 7-2, 275 and growing. Or get CDR from Memphis.
I think you could take some teams dead wood for Jet or Stack and a get a draft pick. If only Gerald Wallace had signed with the Mavs last year things would’ve been different but he chose money over wins.
Do NOT trade Bass.
I agree with Michael: Keep Bass. He’s a beast.
I predict that the Mavericks will take Big Foot or pass.
It would take Bass to get in to the back side of the top 10. I’m not as down on Gordon (as you guys apparently are), because had he been playing anywhere other than the cluster-eff at Indiana, I think he would be a top-5 pick easy.
And I would put my best hope in CD-R still being there and moving to 28 for cash considerations.
You just love Joe Alexander because he’s a cracker.
By the way–yay for Diop coming back. He is worth the entire mid-level exception.
Just another step towards putting that gawd-awful trade in the past.
