The LATimes/Bloomberg poll says conservatives outnumber liberals, but McCain isn’t getting a large slice of them. And the ones who do support him appear “to be begrudgingly voting for McCain.” The begrudgers, I hypothesize, are of the Limbaugh/Coulter/Fox News/Dobson variety. The remaining 42% are Obamacons like me. It is, of course, still early, and there is a lot of flag-waving, fear-mongering, and return-to-our-principles pledging left to do, so I expect conservative support of McCain will pick up. But can it produce the enthusiasm necessary to win an election?
UPDATE: Whoops. As a commenter noted, only 15% “are Obamacoms like me.” The rest say either they will vote for another candidate or are undecided. My fault for skimming. Should have known better from other poll results, which have also reported the 15% figure.
I hope McCain doesn’t have to sell his soul to those kooky conservatives to get elected. That is a scary group loudmouths.
DGirl, there is a tradition of Republican presidental candidates selling out to the kooky conservatives to get elected. The bad part is when they stick to their promises to the kooks after being elected.
Do you think McCain’s rigid secularism will effect his ability to claim the far right evangelical vote?
I suspect his inability to talk seriously about religion will significantly weaken his support among GWB’s usual base voter. Obama’s ability to openly talk about religion in terms most people can understand, and without resorting to hate speech or fear mongering, has caused a shift of religious votes in his direction.
It is, of course, still early, and there is a lot of flag-waving…
Don’t worry, once you elect your racist Jesus all that horrible patriotism will come to an end. There will still be flag waving though.
Wow do you want to call this “spin” or just lying? From the referenced article:
“Among voters who described themselves as conservative, 58% said they would vote for McCain; 15% said they would vote for Obama, 14% said they would vote for someone else, and 13% said they were undecided.”
Now don’t tell me you just subtracted 58 from 100 and assigned the difference to Obama? Another brilliant post.
Headline didn’t say “only 58% said they would vote for McCain and the other 42% said YES WE CAN!! OBAMA in ‘08!!!!” I think the whole point was that for him being the presumptive Republican nominee all all, it sure seems like conservatives are not too stoked on McCain. It’s not twisting the numbers.
And I am going to let others tackle the racist comment. I can’t. I have to go oppress white people.
Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others! Vote for Kang. A vote for Kodos is a wasted vote.
Wick, I usually have a lot of respect for you. But you and the other Obamacons are getting snowed under. The undying support of Obama by Andrew Sullivan should be all you need to run the other way.
“The remaining 42% are Obamacons like me.” Any thing else?
Awwwwww, man. I hate it when I assume that sarcasm is taken as read. (Pronounced like the color)
sarcasm is often lost in the intertubes.
true dat.
my favorite quote so far of the week (not said towards anyone particularly and certainly not anything to do with this thread)
“the internet. it ain’t full of stars”
“racist jesus”
you hear that kids? it’s the sound of a once might political party crumbliing. fear and desperation, all rolled into one happy death nail.
LA Times is a proud liberal rag — not so sure I would put a lot of faith into these survey results.
Gallup shows the race dead even — and that should worry some Dems since Obama has been receiving a lot of positive press throughout the primary season while McCain sat on the sidelines after his early victory.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/108376/Gallup-Daily-Obama-McCain-Tied-45.aspx
At this point in 2002, Kerry had a double digit lead over Bush and Gore had a large lead as well at this point in 2000.
you hear that kids? it’s the sound of a once might political party crumbliing
Yes, how silly of anyone to think that Obama would hold the same views of the racist church he attended for twenty years. He had no idea, these aren’t the people he knew, it’s all a distraction etc….
Knell. Death knell.
diahh –
duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude. what’s your deal with the race thing? you’re playing the race card more than oj simpson’s defense team. are you convinced that, were obama to win, all whites will be rounded up and forced into work camps? seriously. bring up his policies and shoot holes in them. talk **** about his haircut. play the idiot card with some “hussein/he likes muslims” stuff. but seriously, the racist thing is so weird. are you REALLY afraid the brown people are going to oppress you that much? it’s frankly bizarre.
I agree, especially since he is half Caucasian. Its like you got that stupid e-mail and honestly think it was a list of talking points.
it’s frankly bizarre.
Is that right? I doubt that if a white Republican had attended a racist church for two decades you would be so dismissive.
I agree, especially since he is half Caucasian
Sorry, you’re going to have to explain which part absolves him of racism, the black or the white?
I am trying to figure out what an “Obamacon” really is. From everything I have read an Obamacon appears to be a Conservative/Libertarian that wants change for the sake of change. This is neither a Conservative or Libertarian ideal. As Americans, we can change presidents every 4 years if we want to but unless there is a movement to change this constitutional law, I don’t see how the mere change of presidents in an election year falls into a “conservative” ideal.
I think the man has worn the proverbial hair shirt over what his former (I repeat – former) pastor said. He disagreed with it publicly and eventually left that church.
The only one still screaming that he’s a racist are the ones that probably have never had to come to grips with the fact that the church community you love is lead by a man with very different beliefs and values than you, and that it will mean you have to leave that church. It’s not a step to be taken lightly, even for the a presidential candidate.
No really, run with it. Keep running with it. Freeze black crosses on Obama supporters lawns. It’s time for Whitey to rise up and shake off the shackles of oppression.
Can we please quit talking about racism?! If I wanted to read blog postings about racism I would ask for discussion on why so many seemingly healthy African-Americans use handicap placards to get the good parking spaces? Or, why do white people smell like puppies?
dialhh does make a good point when she points Obama’s connection to a known racist. Why do liberals write this off so easily, when you know for a fact the thunder would be called down on any white or republican candidate? Obama is brave and courageous for severing his ties to a racist. Would McCain get the same sort of support if his pastor used to be Fred Phelps? I think we all know the answer to that question.
Equality for all doesn’t mean minimalizing the mistakes of minorities just because they’re minorities. That’s the same sort of favoritism that the equal rights movement should be against.
In all of diahh’s postings, I think I have yet to see him/her say anything positive about his/her own candidate (presumably, McBush–uh, I mean, McCain), and what that person will (tell you they are going to) do to turn our country around and get it going in the right direction again.
Instead of ranting on OBAMA [yes we can!], why not tell us why McBus–sorry, McCain–is worthy of a vote?
The reason there has been no focus on McB–damn, I just can’t stop myself!!–McCain in the media is because he has NOTHING to say. His main thought (as evidenced by his main staffer, Charlie Black, in Fortune mag) is, “gee I hope we get attacked again, so people will vote for me.” Beyond that, there is no plan.
Just more of the same, only more so.
I agree. I would just like to see the discussion about obama or mccain, be it pro or con not be “OBAMA IS A RACIST” and so that is the last I will ever say about that. My beef among many with McCain was that four years ago, he had enough of what seemed to be a free-thinking,outside party lines approach that he regularly irked the Bush empire and threatened to be a Republican I could vote for. I don’t understand why the Republicans would water him down/Conservative Christian him out in a time when that’s the only thing that can help them?
Because for conservatives, the word “compromise” does not exist in their vocabulary. It’s their way or the highway, all or nothing, black & white. They’d rather lose than compromise with a liberal…or even with a moderate.
What other stereotypes do you have to throw out there, Julie? Either make a legitimate point or shut the f*** up. We don’t need you reciting your talking points to us.
I know I will get the rath for this, but it does fit into this thread in a small beady way.
No one’s supposed to know, but Collin County paid former teen court officer – and known homosexual – Justin Nichols $26,500 to leave his job. Unfortunately, the presiding judge didn’t read the severance papers closely enough – they read “$26 million.” [DMN]

Thanks SB for proving my point!!
It’s easy to see why conservatives like Wick are on the Obama wagon. While they don’t have much heart, conservatives, they can think and they do accept that it’s all about self interest.
Anyone, conservative or liberal, with a vested interest in an entity would want to have the best candidate put in charge of the entity. In this instance we have the office of President of the United States up for grabs.
Look at the candidates. One only got into college because of his father being able to pull strings. Then he managed to graduate at the bottom of his class. One of the jobs he trained for in college was being a pilot. In his career as a pilot his one success was surviving plane crashes. He survived five of them. You can look at endeavor after endeavor and the only thing consistant about him is his ability to fail and then walk away.
Look at the second candidate. He got to the best colleges on his merits. He was at the top of his class at each level. He did all this without a father in the wings supporting his failings.
After college he has been succesful at every thing he has done. Not the least of these successes is as a husband and a father.
He took on the most successful liberal political machine and whupped it soundly. No one, not even the Rove/Bush self destroying conservative steam roller could have done that.
So I can see why conservatives with their inherent and constant self interest as a guide have chosen to support Obama. Even if Obama married a woman everyone knows no one would call the C-word face to face.
As the father of daughters and grandfather of granddaughters that in itself might be the number one reason to vote for Obama over McCain.
Only a loser would use such language in the first place. But it’s a real loser that would call his wife that in public.
Lets face it both of these candidates are lame.People who could actually change things aren’t crazy enough to run.Their worried that a mistake they made in the past or what their religion is will come back to bite them in the butt. Most people didn’t know what religion FDR was and he was probably racist but he helped saved our country. So keep fighting back and forth on whose team is better.Hopefully the person who becomes president will choose better cabinet members than the last president(not including Powell).
monkey god, you hit the nail on the head with your post. We only get the candidates that the DNC and RNC feel can be vetted by the media, and that counts out a lot of people who could really make a difference.
You’re never going to get extreme left or right candidates because they would both just blow each other out of the water. But the fact that in the past few days, every post about the two candidates on this blog has garnered 30+ comments means that at least a few people must think that one or more of the candidates are super ok or super not ok. Or we all have extremely lenient bosses and business is pretty slow.
