Sure, Dooner, attorneys and financial-industry types still must wear a tie to inspire confidence. But do you require that the man who develops your software wear a tie? The guy who creates a marketing strategy to move more widgets in a hard-to-reach demographic? The editorial types who alert you to the 473 best plastic surgeons in Dallas?

Buck, sorry but when I fly, I want my pilot to be wearing a tie. When I’m in court, I want my male attorney to wear a tie. Perhaps your businessmen in line will put on their ties once they get to their meeting. As for the rent car agents, they were already at work.

I was at the airport renting a car last week.

None of the businessmen in line wore a tie.

But all the rent car agents did.

It’s reversed — the higher you go, the less you wear a tie –
