For this year’s Best of Big D issue, I’ve been assigned a sidebar about single people. I’m single, and I know where I go, but I need some help finding out where YOU go. Email me and tell me where you go to meet girls/ guys, and why, please. I will really appreciate it, because they won’t let me put Al Biernat’s, or the Old Monk. So, I’m drawing a big blank. Thanks.

My first impression after reading this:
Is Sarah looking for fresh waters for trolling?
Trust me. They go to The Door (formerly Gypsy Tea Room Deep Ellum) I know. I went there on June 10th for what was an RSVP event for a Spanish designer. Except that the event I was asked to attend was JULY 10. So I was with teen-20s at a punk band rave. Everyone acted single. (But then so do most of your husbands when you’re not around. Or guys in Vegas on ‘business’.)
Why not Al’s? I am single and I go there!
Well, kinda single, but it is still fun for singles.
They go to State & Allen in Uptown — that is for sure. Great food, huge patio, and it’s smack dab in the middle of hundreds of all the Uptown apartments, condos and townhouses. Especially on Wednesday nights — wine is on special and the singles are out in droves. Sunday brunch time, too, has all the singles out at S&A.
I like TABC (across from State and Allen bar), but Social House (where the old Nikita used to be) in West Village is really fun, and there is a ton of single people there.
There are also a lot of single people at Lotus on McKinney, but it is a little too crowded for me.
For those of us in the north part of Dallas: RA Sushi in Plano at the Shops at Legacy, and the new Gordon Biersch Brewery next door. RA is packed most every night with very yummy men to look at, it’s not nearly as repulsive as Martini Park! Gordon Biersch has remarkable beer so you can find some conversations there and it’s very friendly! Both are a transplant from the Phoenix market!
you’ll get plenty of good advice on where to go (i’ve already seen several good comments). So I’ll limit my advice to telling you to ignore Rawlins. Trust me, they dont go to deep ellum.
Hmmmm – locations and days of the week depend on the crowd are you looking to find and type of atmospher.
Sundays – Primo’s patio (laid back atmosphere with the pretty people trying to down play their attire with flip flops). Some of that crowd has also moved to Capitol Pub on Henderson to enjoy the brunch and patio
Mondays – Martini Ranch ($3 martinis, DJ – it’s a big industry night for those who worked the weekend)Social House – great patio and again, industry fave
Tuesdays – Primos Patio / Republic as the Uptown crowd runs in same area
Thursdays (the new Friday) – Rattlesnake at The Ritz Carlton. The charity/event crowd stops by after their 6-8 or 7-9 soiree since they are usually well dressed. Another post-event favorite: Nick & Sam’s bar. Great place to grab a glass of wine and people watch. Thursdays at Suite are a great place if you want to be seen but squished like a sardine – I’d say best “dance club scene”.
NEW to the scene (for the 2nd time) but worth checking out: The Stoneleigh patio and The Mansion patio – tailored to the crowd that orders ****tails and wine, they are fun places to go with a group after an event at the DMA, Nasher or Symphony.
Hope that helps.
The Plano Fire Department on Ave K.
I’m not single but all my friends are. They always seem to be at The Loon on Lemmon Ave.
The Kroger at Mockingbird station or the fruit and vegetable section of Central Market on Greenville if I’m feeling particularly ambitious.
BTW, that particular Kroger is the one where firemen shop, like around 3 p.m. or so.
Not that I have this stuff written down.
Single in your 20s and single in your 30s are two different things. You will not catch me at places like The Loon, The Barley House, Corner Bar or Primos because I’m not about to compete with Skanky McHooters.
Those of us who want to minimize our interaction with frat packers go to places like Meridian Room, Lee Harveys, Windmill Lounge, Capital Pub, Times Ten Wine Cellars, Bodega Bar, Cosmos, **** & Bull, Elbow Room (hey-oh, med students), Stoneleigh P, Balcony Club…
Also local events like Thursday/Friday nights at the DMA or any of our wonderful film festivals that are going on throughout the year.
Divey Pick-up Joint: The Loon
Upscale Pick-up Joint: Ritz Bar
Courtesan Pick-up Joint: Ritz Bar
Pick-up Joint with a View: GhostBar
Ironic Mustache and unwashed The Doves t-shirt Pick-up Joint: Lee Harveys or Double Wide
Swingers Pick-up Joint: Absinthe or Jet Set Club
Out and Proud Pick-up Joint: Village Station
Many middle aged male Dallas ’singles’ (defined as ‘between marriages, when they can’t get to Fearling’s Bar), let their fingers do the walking and ‘order in’. Hey. Those Dallas ‘trophy wives’ have to network.
Until the Same-Sex marriage laws are changed in Texas, Oak Lawn is FULL of single people
Standing in line at Sprinkles Cupcakes.
If they are standing in line at Sprinkles, I’d say that is the reason why they are still single.
I will agree with CDD to an extent. There are much, much different places for those in their 20s and those in their 30s. I’m 28 and being on the cusp can cause some confusion on where to go. I popped into Social House last Friday and it was full of single people but most were 25 and younger. I had my days with fraternity boys and have since moved on. Oh, the fond memories.
I’ll disagree with my
friend there. Al’s is fun for food and drinks at the bar and I’m not one to turn down a free ****tail, but I don’t want to do my dad. And most of those guys are older than my dad.
The Loon can be good depending on when you go as the age range varies enough as the course of the night and week goes on. Not all girls there are Skanky McHooters, but if are only there at 1am, you might disagree. It’s a big stop-off place after a night at Social House and other West Village/McKinney Ave joints.
State & Allen Lounge was FULL of single people last time I was there.
But then again, I’m still single so what do I know.
The Porch, Cuba Libre, Fireside Pies, and Hibiscus are all excellent places for singles to meet other singles.
Tristan forgot to mention his future hot spot on Henderson: Victor Tango’s. That should bring in the late 20s, 30 something crowd….
Let’s see — where is the last meat market I was at..ahh yes – pretty much anywhere in Addison.
Onward single people — there is a Chris-Chris on every barstool just dying to “rock your world” (attribution: brett michaels)
State & Allen lounge or the (newish) Blackfriar on McKinney
Thanks, Tristan!
Albertson’s at Lemmon & McKinney
Ah yes, the Albertson’s at Lemmon and McKinney… also known as “Hot Albertson’s”… I say this because one of my married friends called me on a Thursday night from the frozen food aisle there, whispering, claiming that if he were still single he would be spending every free evening in the future strolling the aisles just checking out the beautiful girls. He ended the phonecall abruptly… saying that he had to go due to a clean-up in the frozen food section… everything had melted because of the three “hot” girls standing too close to one another around one of the freezer doors…
Ah Tristan, maybe a disclaimer would be good. Don’t you own those joints? By the way, I’m assuming you’re single (although maybe not if Joe Francis get’s locked up!)….
Can I order a Skanky McHooter to go?
In Addison, Black Finn & Sherlocks are both pretty common single hang outs
