D Magazine Issues a Formal Apology for Publishing Incorrect Source Image for Digital Illustration Accompanying Article in the June 2008 Issue

(DALLAS, Texas, June 9, 2008)— D Magazine has issued a formal apology to Luis Fernando Perez, sports anchor for Telemundo/NBC Universal, for incorrectly using a photograph of him as a basis for a digital illustration accompanying the article “Why Does This Man Still Have a Badge and a Gun?” by Trey Garrison in the June 2008 issue.

The article contains information about a Dallas police officer named Fernando Perez who was involved in an alleged chase that resulted in two men being thrown from a motorcycle and killed. The story also includes details of Officer Perez’s lengthy history of administrative and disciplinary punishment for poor job performance.

In designing the article for publication, D Magazine purchased from a third party a photograph that the magazine was told was of Officer Perez—when, in fact, the photograph was of the Telemundo/NBC Universal sports anchor. The magazine then provided the image to an artist, who created the digital illustration that ran in the magazine.

“D Magazine sincerely regrets the error,” says executive editor Tim Rogers. “I personally apologize to Luis Fernando Perez for the mistake and for any grief it might have caused him.”
