CBS11 reporter Steve Pickett got his start in journalism as a summer intern. So he was a natural choice to address a reception/awards ceremony here today for ExxonMobil’s Community Summer Jobs Program. (That’s a deal where Exxon ponies up millions to place college students in summer jobs with nonprofits like The Senior Source and the Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas.) Addressing the morning crowd at the Dallas Arboretum, Pickett recalled scoring a big interview with Rex Tillerson, the ExxonMobil CEO, during last week’s shareholder meeting in Dallas. Which served as a setup for Truman Bell, the ExxonMobil Foundation’s senior program officer for education and diversity. “Since you’re best buddies with Mr. Tillerson,” Bell told Pickett, “why don’t you come out to the office sometime and help me get a couple of questions in.”
Nice! Steve Picket somehow manages to do really good reporting and really good community service while remaining basically off the radar. Not sure how Dallas has managed to keep him when this market is losing lots of equally talented people.
Oh please. He didn’t “land and interview” with the CEO. He participated in what’s called a scrum, where journalists — particularly TV people — mob an executive and ask him questions.
Steve is a great reporter that employs empathy when dealing with sensitive situations yet still will ask the tough questions.
