An alert FBvian who lives near the Hall Street station on the new Green Line sent word this morning that workers were tearing up the tracks they recently laid. DART spokesman Morgan Lyons explains what’s going on:
The concrete pedestals put in place to support the track in these areas (Baylor Station to Hall St., Canton to I-30, Hatcher to 2nd — about 6,000 linear ft.) were deficient. In other words, we didn’t feel like they would hold the track in place properly and had to come out. That type of problem can also shorten the life of the track, and that makes us replace it sooner and spend more to maintain it. So it’s good to catch it now, instead of a few years down the road when we’re operating.
He says the fault lies with the contractor, and DART intends to have the contractor absorb the cost of correcting the problem, about $600,000. Lyons says the mistake will not affect DART’s construction schedule.
