Museum to Change Name to Honor Ross (Not the One From Friends)

The Museum of Nature and Science just had itself a big news conference to make a Major Announcement. This just in from Intern Abby, on the scene:

The children of Ross and Margot Perot gave $50 million to the Museum of Nature and Science. So now it will be called the Ross Perot Museum of Nature and Science.

Damn straight it will.

Update: The name will be the Perot Museum of Nature & Science. No “Ross.” More details.

So we can go to The Nasher for some sculpture and then head to The Perot for some nature.

As I recall, the Myerson Symphony Center was named because of a whopping gift from the Perots, to honor their former employee, Myerson. Presbyterian Hospital has also received big chunks from him. Unlike some other rich white guys in this town, Perot has always given back to this commmunity in a big way, and to put his name on a building is a pretty token reward for that.

I thought Frank Gehry was going to be the architect for this building.

It’s not all just about philanthropy. It goes into Perot,Jr.’s Victory Park development which will draw additional patrons to the retail there. While I heard Perot ,Sr. say that the “poor under priviledged will learn and dream” because of this project, but the poor and underpriviledged don’t live in the Northern sector of Dallas,so how are they going to get there? I am not trying to diminish the philanthropy, but someone from DISD needs to work with the planners of this museum to find a way to integrate on site classroom learning for these poor and under priviledged.DISD misses opportunities to take students from the poorest parts, especially, of Dallas schools and educate them to art, music, dance, and sculpture in the arts district. The city can not continually place all of the venues for Dallas citizens in the Northern sector without considering the Southern sector.
