Izaguirre’s Plummeting Street Cred

Reporting DART’s closure of its Akard Street station on the noon news today, Belo8 anchor Cynthia Izaguirre pronounced the street “AY-kurd” (as in acorn) instead of ACK-urd, not once but twice. Nit-picking? Heck, yes. But the thing is, we probably wouldn’t have even noticed if not for all those annoying commercials pumping Izaguirre that assure us, ad nauseum, that “she grew up here … she’s just returning to work in the town she loves … and, oh yeah, did we mention she grew up here?” Wasn’t a ‘burb babe, either.

Never have understood her hire. She makes mistakes of some kind in every single newscast. Every single one! You can tell Farmer can’t wait to get the heck out of there.

  • KD

Well, at least she pronounces her last name accurately.

  • Tobie B

so…is it BEX-rr or BEAR (that being Bexar) and I ain’t even from here, but I know how to pronounce crap!

  • KD

PS - Cynthia Izaguirre is a great hire. Much better than fembot Hyland. Watching the Hyland & Farmer duo was painful. Like Brenda Teele painful.

  • AJ

Well, to be honest, I’ve noticed several misprounciations. She also appears to be a little to “hyped” up in the mornings for me. Maybe she’s overloaded on caffeine to stay awake. Greg Fields even made a comment about it the other day on the air.

I remember when she first arrived, they ran some footage of M.L. King III and she commented, “boy, that sure was a fiery preacher. That’ll wake you up!” First, people in the news industry should know who M.L King III is. Secondly, he is not a preacher. Third, if she says “that’ll wake you up again” after a story, I am going to scream!

Also, this morning she made a face after she read a story about the chair of the Texas Democratic party and his wife announcing their support of Senator Obama. It was totally inappropriate and so obvious.

  • Kathy

KD….Didn’t mean to suggest losing Hyland wasn’t a good move…it was great; she was painful! Couldn’t agree more. But, CI is an awfully bad replacement.

And yes, Brenda Teele is painful….and so is Gary Cogill….and so is Amy Vandersomething. Why do they have that show again?

  • Bethany

I think she should drop that segment on things you can find on the Web (which most of us have already found, TYVM) and play a rousing game of “Gay or Not Gay.”

I mean, she’s good at that, right?

Kathy, to make money. A lot of those people, if I recall correctly, pay to be Teeled and Vandercogilled.

  • Tom

The way I understand it, unless you’re the SPCA of Texas a celebrity with something to plug (e.g., Paris Hilton’s “exclusive” with Cogill when her bad movie premiered here), all of the segments are sold, so it’s basically an informercial disguised as a Regis and Kelly Lee knockoff.

  • JS

AY-kurd — and he’s gay. Or blind. Or closed. Or gay.

This one has the climber’s reaction:

    Never gets old.

Akard… would that be the same Akard that runs within 3 blocks of WFAA’s headquarters?

  • Justin

Wait a minute the Akard station is closing? ****, aren’t we supposed to be trying to revitalize downtown?

  • Justin

Uh oh! Looks like I used naughty language, allow my to rephrase:

“Wait a minute the Akard station is closing? Feces, aren’t we supposed to be trying to revitalize downtown?”

  • Bethany

It’s only closing for a month or so, relax Pookie.

Why don’t you just TURN OFF the TV and listen to NPR? No matter how irritating public radio can be, it’s better than commercial TV

  • East Dallas Eccentric

She wasn’t a burb babe but some of us didn’t consider parts of North Dallas ‘the real Dallas’ either (sorry Wilonsky). I’m trying to remember if I’ve heard her pronounce “Cadiz”…

  • Jane

She overpronounces her hispanic last name.
    Just say Iza-gear, hermana….not

EEEEZZZAAAAGUHEEEERRRRRRRTTTHHHHA- Jesus, does she have a hairball?

    Me-yow.

  • MIssing Dots

    Jane,

Why do you care about her personal grooming habits?

  • Justin

    Thanks Bethany :)

  • Tobie B

Jane, thank you for the late afternoon laugh

Always reminds me of Miranda Veracruz De La Hoya Cardinal.

This reminds me of the time about 10 or so years ago when another new WFAA daytime anchor pronounced “Ennis” to rhyme with “penis”.

  • BSG

    @JS at 2:12 pm

    You = Genius.

  • Jay

Anyone else think that the climber sounds like Owen Wilson?

  • Brian

    I already miss Todd Carruth….

  • Robbie

I loved Jackie Hyland when she was here she was all class her replacement doesn’t have a shred of class that is the problem. And what is wrong with Alexa she looks ill these days.

  • Dave Thomas

She was a surprise hire at channel 8 for this job and she mysteriously wasn’t on air when she was supposed to debut. I remember unclebarky asking questions and getting some vague “she’s fine, she’ll be ready in a few days” kind of comments.

She seems nice, but I don’t think she’s much of an anchor. I don’t trust her to get the facts right when she’s reading a story.

  • julie

I met Cynthia when she came to our polling place to vote on Primary Day. Dem, by the way. She was lovely and very nice. That “overcaffeinated” style is just how she is naturally. I like her, she seems natural.

I loved Hyland. What class. That was a real loss.

Teele and Cogill are really, really painful to watch. And Teele is so tiny she makes the blond look 50 pounds overweight, which she’s probably not.

  • Randy Brown

Can’t stand her. I’ll bet she’s the type who goes to Uncle Julio’s and order “AYNCHEEELATHAS COHN KEH-SO with a side of WAAAAAHCAAAHHMOLLLLAY”

  • Gastronome

Randy - you ignorant white boy, everyone who knows anything about food, Spanish, Tex-mex and proper locution knows it’s pronounced GuaKamol. Where are you from?????

  • Gastronome

Furthermore Randy - aside from the food and the hackneyed characature of a dilapidated Mexican slum they use for a theme (which is an insult to Hispanics - can you imagine Dr. Fernandez taking his children there for an uplifting cultural experience), what’s not to like about Uncle J’s?

  • todd carruth

Don’t make me say Grady Niblo!

  • Randy Brown

    Gastronome-

You are right, I am en EEEEDEEEEIOT.

  • TheKid

    I vote for more Alexa.

  • Rawlins' Poisoned DART

Cut her some slack. I think reading this that there are a lot more issues with some of the posters than w/ Ms. Cynthia herself. I mean, Macie Jepson said one night that Oprah shopped at Hermes Paris. Now FYI, this is pronounced “ERR-MEZ”, Not “HER-MEEZ” as Jepson called it. And then there is always the time last year when I heard on PBS 13 an announcer during pledge speaking of “Michael Buble” as “Michael BOO-BULL”.

PS: Jackie Hyland was lovely when I was on a segment last Sept. Per Ms Izaquirre, anyone who can be that perky that early deserves credit. She’s like a beagle pup that just ate a carrot cake. The ‘dream team’ I’D like to see is her and Brendon Higgins together. Who’d need coffee?

  • Randy Brown

    Rawlins-

You are clearly uninformed and insignificant. Way to go. Back to you, Wick.

  • ColorBarz

Cynthia has no business being in this market.
She has a way of charming the higher up’s who act thrilled with her, almost like a Vampire puts a victim in a trance. Like T.O. says get out the popcorn, the mistakes will keep flowing and provide many many laughs. My prediction: She’ll last another 8 months at WFAA, then be moved to reporting and slowly disappear only to return to NM where they will promo the fact they have someone with market 5 experience. Just wait, you’ll see.

  • Jerry

Cynthia needs to lighten up about saying her name…….Cynthia Izzzzzaaaaaguuuuuuuiiiiiiireeeeeeeeee. Around here it’s pronounced IZAGUIRRE…..short and simple. She just needs to go back to where ever she came from. She is so fake you can see right through her. I’ve read other blogs that say…..she’s hot. Whoever said that needs to get their eyes checked.

  • Jordon

You all! Cynthia is a great news-presenter! during her time here in ABQ, all of New Mexico fell in love with her, and her energy. She is a wonderful person, and great newsperson. I always thought that she would make it to CNN or MSNBC, and still do! She is great, and easy to approach! We saw her when she was covering the balloon fiesta in 2006, and she was so charming! I didn’t approach her that time however, as she was about to go on air. If you saw her downtown, or at a place old-town or just anywhere around, she was delightful! You all are very lucky to have her, and I’d consider moving to Dallas just to see her on the news!

  • Big Daddy G

I remember Izzy when she was here in Albuquerque. I have to agree with most of the posters from Texas, she doesn’t belong there. She is in the wrong place. She belongs in prime time, where a person with her charm , intellect, and spirit make a difference. It’s just a camera lens but it reaches millions. How good are you at making millions feel included in a conversation about the things that are important to all of us on a daily basis. It takes a special talent to do that day in and day out, and then go out into the public and be judged on a personal and professional level. Cynthia has that talent and it is wasted on those who can’t even get up next to their own spouse with that level of communication. Don’t hate her because she has class and for those of you who are looking through a solid wall, she is as beautiful as she is smart. Last time I checked that wasn’t a reason to dismiss hard work and professionalism. Izzy your the best, the rest of you, go kiss your spouse, hug your kids, and be thankful your not being judged so harshly every time you walk out your front door and open your mouth. Give her a break. And Izzy, roll them R’s, it’s who we are!

I DID LIKE JACKIE AND JUSTIN
BUT I WOUNDER WHY DID SHE LEAVE
I WOUNDER IF HER HUBBY TOOK THE KIDS TO NEW YOURK BECAUSE HE GOT TIRED OF JACKIE AND JUSTIN FLIRTING ALL THE TIME

  • Jerry

I’ve stopped watching News 8 Daybreak because I got tired of hearing Cynthia pronounce her last name. Then she was filling in at the 10:00 PM news and I stopped watching that too. I’ve switched back to Channel 5. Everyone there knows how to pronounce their name so it doesn’t offend anybody. I can’t even stand to here her say “THAAAAANNNNKKKKKK YOUUUUUUU AAAALLEEEXXIIIAAAA”

  • JB

Cynthia is beautiful, sexy and talented. She is way too talented for Dallas. I hope she makes it to the national stage so the world can appreciate her. The only time I watch channel 8 is to see her. “Keep It Up Cynthia.”

  • Jerry

I read on another blog that Cynthia’s off more than she’s at work. Maybe she’s out looking for another job or working at Wal-Mart as a checker. She needs to just bow out gracefully and realize that Dallas may be her home but she’s just not right for the Dallas / Ft. Worth area.

  • Louise Calvillo

Hey - lighten up on Cynthia. She’s real and has good energy.
She starts the morning with a smile that’s contagous, which these days, that’s hard to do.
    Lou
