Speaking of Josh Hamilton

Holy cow. Did you know this guy used to do drugs? (Kidding aside, it’s a story for the ages, really.)

    Wilonsky broke this story.

  • Incognizant

Yet if somebody broke a story on baseball but nobody cared about it in the first place, would it make a sound?

  • Chris

actually, newberg broke the story. And its a good article.

  • Robert Wilonsky

I will go out on a limb, Eric, and say that Sports Illustrated broke this story.

  • Jay

A crack dealer that takes checks? Baseball players get all the perks.

  • Gwyon

The guy has flames tattooed on his arm. Because his arm is that fast!

  • Josh Pearson

Thanks for posting this, Tim. It’s probably the best sports-related story I’ve ever read. Really good stuff.

  • Evan Grant

Actually, Tim, I think the Washington Post was the first to write an in-depth story on Josh Hamilton’s comeback way back in February, 2007. Dave Sheinin wrote it and it’s a great piece of work. My story appeared in January of this year, before Hamilton played a game for the Rangers. I realize sometimes D overlooks things that happen, well, right under their nose, so I thought i’d be helpful and post the link to the DMN story readers could have gotten five months ago: http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/012708dnspowebrangersz.218a1b6.html

Wow. And here I was, just trying to draw Big Bob offsides with a hard count (successful; thank you, game tape), and suddenly the estimable Evan Grant is in the backfield. How did that happen?

Just for the record: Not only did we all read Evan’s story, we decided it precluded a Josh Hamilton profile, because it was so good. And Tim, dumb as he is, did try to make a subtle joke, as in, “Hey, did you know Josh Hamilton did drugs?” (Which is why the next sentence begins, “Kidding aside…”.)

Evan: Love you, miss you, mean it.

  • Brett

Good story, Evan. I didn’t read it back then, because your newspaper was using such a tiny font, and the colors didn’t catch my eye, but now I’m hooked!

PS: More charts and graphs please!

  • the cynic

    what’s a newspaper?

ps: will they play this baseball thingy at the new Cowboys universe, too?

  • jrp

i drafted fort worth’s brad hawpe and arlington’s hunter pence in the 10th and 13th rounds of my fantasy league and hamilton was still on the board…dumb dumb stoopid i am

i’m in last place and dude that stole josh in the 16th round is in 1st

to understate the obvious, hamilton is a great great talent and i hope we can watch him stay sober forever and play CF for the strangers for the next 10+ years

  • Tim Rogers

Speaking of hooked, nice bonefish, Evan!

  • Nancy Nichols

Yes, Evan has himself a nice bonefish. He is the Josh Hamilton of the Abaco Islands. Well, except for the drug part. Or the tattoo thing. But comeback kid? Texas Sportswriter of the Year. Yes, yes, yes.

  • Triple Wildcat

A Texas Ranger finally makes the cover of Sports Illustated and they don’t even show his face? What kind of cover photo is that?

And we should all be glad the Yankees and Mets both suck this year, or else the Hamilton story would never see the cover in (NY)SI.

  • Randy Brown

Like Hamilton, I hope the bonefish got a second chance, too. If not, Evan is species bigot.

  • Nancy Nichols

    Fish still swims.

  • Zac Crain

Looks like that dude caught Evan.

  • IFB

jeez. Now I know why DMNs site traffic is up whatever percent. All the FB links to it!
