Dirk Has Himself a Honey
I was just perusing BILD this morning. You know, the German paper? In a Q&A, Dirk confirms that he has taken an American girlfriend:
BILD: Sie haben seit kurzem eine Freundin, eine Amerikanerin…
Nowitzki: Stimmt, aber darüber rede ich nicht gern. Nur soviel: Es ist alles noch sehr frisch, ich kann noch nicht sagen, was draus wird. Wir werden uns wahrscheinlich erst in ein paar Monaten wieder sehen, wenn ich nach Dallas zurückkomme.
Sure glad I took German in high school. Wait, no. That’s not true. I took French. [link props]

I did take German in high school, performed poorly, and will now attempt an Internet-free translation:
“BILD: You have a new girlfriend, an American.
“Nowitzki: That’s true, but I can’t say much. Only Soviets: it’s all very fresh, I can’t say, where this is going. We’ll probably only see each other again in a few months, when I return to Dallas.”
So: how’d I do? Have I made Herr Wieden proud?
This is the Alta Vista Babelfish translation:
“Is correct, but over it I do not talk gladly. Only as much: It is still very fresh everything, I can yet say, what draus becomes. We will probably only see ourselves in a few months again, if I return after Dallas.”
Something may be lost in translation, but one wonders if the last sentence means “if I have to go back to Dallas or if I am traded.”

Babelfish is good for single words, but there are many German word that can’t be translated into English!

Dirk: He has freulein feet and dyed frau hair. And he throws fits like a hausfrau whose schnitzel has gone sour like a bad bratwurst in a storefront window.

Dirk: As much as Tom Hicks understands baseball.
Bild: Will you return to Dallas?
Dirk: Only when my new team plays there.
My German is terrible. Something about ‘Jessica Simpson’ and Tony leaving her coverage wide open.
