Will the Last Environmental Reporter Left Please Turn Out the Lights?

Jim Schermbeck tells us that North Texas is now without an environmental reporter:

Got word moments ago that the Star-T environmental beat reporter, Scott Streater — the only full-time environmental beat reporter left in DFW mainstream media — is leaving that position and moving to Colorado Springs with his wife. The Star-T is not replacing him. Instead he’ll do freelance pieces on DFW environmental problems from Colorado Springs. The paper’s eco-blog, “Planet DFW” — the only DFW mainstream blog devoted to environmental news — will also cease to exist.

The DMN has not had a full-time environmental reporter since Randy Lee Loftis became an editor several years ago. Channel 8 fired the last TV environmental beat reporter, Don Wall, about the same time.

I guess this means all of our environmental problems must be solved.

CORRECTION: Shame on me for taking Schermbeck’s word. From inside the DMN comes the justly deserved ruler rap on the knuckles. Randy Lee Loftis is not now and has never been an editor at the paper. He’s still the environmental writer, assigned to the Projects Desk.

  1. What about the Wall Street Journal’s Jeffrey Ball? Locally based (WSJ Dallas Bureau), Jeff writes about the environment, co-edits our blog on WSJ.com (Environmental Capital) and is a featured speaker at our annual “Eco:Nomics” conference. How much more Mainstream can you get?

  2. Maybe he’s just the last environmental writer you’ve noticed doing anything ….

  3. Local beat reporters, people! Local beat reporters! WSJ bureaus don’t count. And I suspect moving Loftis to the “Projects” means he’s not covering a beat but working ocassional “big” stories. For the first time in 20 years, there’s no daily reporter assigned to keep daily tabs on environmental issues. Amazing.
