I’m not saying Tom is wrong in giving the Wachowski brothers’ take on the super-overrated cartoon an A. Just noting that he–and by extension, the Dallas Morning News–is completely out of step with just about every other film critic in America. Like, way out of step.

And of course those film critics have been so very much in step with the American film audience, haven’t they?
They can give it an “A” or an “F”… I’m still gonna go see it!

Bill M.: Point taken.
And I’m not saying something has to be critically acclaimed or even actually good to be commercially successful.
Just thought it was curious, was all.
Just watch the first 8 minutes of the movie….
If you’re an 8 year old boy you’ll probably love the movie.
What if you like 8 year old boys?
I’m waiting for GI Joe. More eye candy. Even if the movie is horrible, I will gladly sit there with my iPod in, ignore the actual dialogue and just watch.
Don’t knock the review just because it’s different from the others! This is one guy’s opinion, after all. It’s original. I think Maurstad’s writing is almost always refreshing.
Not knocking him, as I said. I like Tom’s stuff, too–generally.
Why do you hate Tom, Zac?
Besides, Zac, Maurstad is a brainy writer, a contrarian thinker who always has a sharp take on popular culture. If he liked it, I’d be inclined to give it a look.
Now I’m definitely not going to see it.
I find it curious as well. An ‘A’ should be reserved for an Oscar-caliber film, not a popcorn summer movie for 8-year olds. I’d be interested to see the grades of other movies that he’s reviewed, but the archive link on his bio page isn’t working.
I’m not sure this is completely relevant, but it’s revealing, I think, in a funny way. Maurstad is an aggressive, some might say, obnoxious driver. Maybe he fancies himself Speed Racer. That dude has nearly run me down more than once. And I saw him almost nail another unfortunate walker one day as he ran a red light.
So can anyone tell me if they got the words to sinc up with the mouth movements? In the cartoon they never did and it was like watching a Japanese film with English dubed in.
Hated it.
At least they wrote a review. Everything else in the movie section comes from some other newspaper. Oh, can anyone tell me why they cannot run a local review of movies or books but they can run concert reviews. Why do I need to have a review of a show that I cannot see since it already happened>
