Avery Johnson is Dead to Me, Mavs
Avery Johnson has been fired by the Mavericks, sources in our offices tell me. I know the body isn’t cold, but I would like to officially announce that I am interested in the position. I’m a hard worker, a self starter, I watched almost every game over the past five seasons (many from the confines of the AAC, as I am a half-season ticket older), and I played varsity basketball at a 3A high school (and even started a bunch of games!). So, as you can see, I’m totally qualified. Plus, I look awesome in a suit and wouldn’t hesitate to have some pipe-wielding MFFLs go to town on Stack’s knee.

Ok fine, Avery’s gone. What about Donnie Jr.? Does he not bear some responsibility for PUTTING TOGETHER THE TEAM that Avery had to coach? Avery didn’t put the trade together, work out the contracts, etc. etc. all by his little general lonesome. IJS…

Yes, can we petition the NBA to force Mark to sell? How can we fire him? Why does he knee jerk react to this loss? If Avery lost the players, its because he didn’t get shown respect from the top- not surprising.

Can we take up a collection to send Dirk to Tough Camp? Or at least send him to general population in Seagoville where he can maybe grow some stones and a post game?
Sean: Dirk isn’t going to develop a post game any more than he already has. Accept it. He has a unique skill set for a 7-footer, and it’s best to appreciate what he can do than gripe about what he can’t. As for toughness, if you mean not throwing punches when someone gets in his face, I can live without that. If you mean general toughness, if playing on a seriously screwed up leg and being one of the few players to show up for the series doesn’t make you happy, then I’m not sure what will. I don’t think Dirk is the problem.

I am happy to cause a distraction so you can have someone club the Human Turnover Machine. The thing about Cuban is that although he is a camera loving billionaire nerd, he does listen to his basketball people. Hence, he listened to Avery (and presumably Donnie) about trading Devin for Kidd. He listened to Avery when Avery vouched for Erick Rockhands Dampier. So blame the basketball people, not the buffoon.

I told everyone that signing Damp to a max contract was the stupidest thing that any team could do. I mean, other than trade promising youth for overpaid over-the-hill washouts.
Any chance that Cubes deliberately ruined the season to reduce the asset value of the team for tax purposes? At least then there would be a defensible rationale.

if you teach them, train them, pamper them and then send them out to do the job, how in the hell is that the Coaches fault when they do not win. On any other job the players would be fired.

I didnt care for avery and his mouth as a spur but he won me over as a coach. Cubes is pulling a jerry jones. Maybe Mark or Mavs Man will be coaching next year.
From a business standpoint, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of player trading he can do. In order to sell season tickets next season, replacing one of the best coaches in the NBA will keep ticket sales from atrophy.
Hope it works out for you, Cuban. I haven’t been to or watched a full game since the Finals collapse vs Miami. I bought an overpriced, massive plasma screen to watch the 2006 away games in Miami. Since then HDNet/Movies have been a less risky way to spend the little time I have in front of the tv. Boo Mavs, again. No tears this time around.
BTW, the team needed a real center or at least a real rebounder more than a Kidd. DAMPier is grows mold on this team.
Betty, this was as much about Avery wanting to get the f out of here as Cuban wanted him out. Avery will be fine and get another job.
I simply want a coach that has one more play besides “Isolation Dirk”. Is that too much to ask? Give me Westphal/Harris combo next year. We can keep Elie and groom him for 2-3 years from now. Done and done.
Avery will be another Byron Scott, having been wrongly fired for a weak team, and do well with another squad.
