While attendance was down yesterday, partly due to the weather, the EDS Byron Nelson Championship couldn’t have concluded in more spectacular fashion. The Four Seasons Resort & Club–which is undergoing a $190 million renovation, including new luxury condos–made a great setting for the nail-biting, three-hole showdown. And while the spectators’ outfits weren’t nearly as skimpy yesterday as earlier in the tourney–”This Comes Off” t-shirts were commonplace then–many still were underdressed against the chill. To remedy that the hotel thoughtfully provided some guests Sunday with colorful “wraps”–one of which was modeled by Caroline Free Bagot from Fulbright & Jaworski LLP (at left) in front of the Four Seasons hospitality suite.
I’m for one, glad that attendance was down this year. I spent my first (and last) Sunday at the Byron this year, I bought 2 high priced tickets (Stub Hub) for my best bud for Christmas. We were told by all the veterans of the Byron, oh man you need to go early, and watch the Pro’s practice, so we did. We arrived at 8:00 am and went through the ticket line, surrendered them for an elastic entry ticket. Alrighty then, drizzle weather, and cold, I’m ready to grab a cup a Joe. Nope, Pavilion was closed, in fact if you are just a Golf Fan, you lose. No refreshments are available to you paying spectators until 10:00 am. I tried to get a cup at the hotel, but the employee standing guard at the door say’s coffee and breakfast is for registered guests at the hotel, and Pro’s or Caddies. Wow, even my money’s not good enough. One employee told me the tournament doesn’t start til 10:00 why would you expect it to be open to spectators. Sry but I’ve never been anywhere where they open the door, take your ticket, let you in, but your not welcome anywhere but the sidewalk. Oh yea, it was cold, and wet. Both outside and inside so far. My best bud and I watched the Pro’s practice, I personally enjoyed watching them pull up to the practice range with their hot cup a Joe, and Burrito. 10:00 am the tournament starts. A few competitors tee off, so we start following, and enjoying the tournament. We felt like we hit the jack pot when we saw holes 5 & 9 was the primo spot to watch the greens from. We secured a spot to watch them come in, Wow we had Texas sized space, this was great….Until….the following fans of Ryan Moore and Adam Scott showed up. Then we were packed in like sardines around the green. Thank God it wasn’t Tiger or someone well known. It even got worse on the 9th. At the end of the 9th we slipped and slid over to 18 to secure a spot for the end of the tour. I think it is incredibly lovely to know 80% of the 18th is privately reserved for corporations. It really made me feel good to stand down in the fairway because my corporation didn’t procure an expensive location for me. By next year 90% is going to be procured. Well we’re about 50 yards away and can still see the colors the competitors were wearing, Until….Ryan Moore showed up. Then all the remote news cameras and the EDS Red pants showed up in their golf carts in the fairway and blocked the view. Thanks guy’s. Since it went to sudden death, we were fortunate to be the select few that ended up giving up our dug in location over to the red pants so they could pull their carts in and out 3 times. Over all I give this tournament a 5 rating out of a possible 10. The location is pretentious, The 18th is dominated by corporate, There were some good golfers, but not worth the price of my tickets. The course to me wasn’t that much better than allot of the local city courses. Next year folks, my 2X2 standing section will be available for someone else. I can find cheaper more enjoyable real estate somewhere else.
Dude, you PAID for your tickets?
“The course to me wasn’t that much better than allot of the local city courses.”
Which local courses are you referring to? Because I’ve played a ton of them and I can’t think of many that compare.
I’ll have to give you benefit of the doubt on this one that maybe you saw the course after several days of heavy traffic and under bleak weather conditions. I went on Thursday and would give my left arm to play that course. It looked spectacular.

I will give you a 5 out of 10 for grammar and punctuation.
Thanks for the feed back folks, Allison, Men don’t benefit from pushing their **** out. Yeppa, I had to pay my way. Josh, I play mostly Richardson, Plano, & the Frisco area. I like to call Sherrill Park home, and yes it was Sunday. The ground was trashed out. I’m not saying it is a terrible course, but there are many local courses that really do compare to this one. A lot less on pretentiousness though. An immediate thought comes to me regarding the worlds top players, they don’t like this facility either. After my only visit Sunday, I agree with them. I saw nothing there that would draw me back, including Allison, he he he. Sorry for the grammar and punctuation old man, I should have realized at the FrontBurner there would be someone more intrested in critiquing editing skills, than appreciating the message. But fortunately I did reach 1 out of 3 in the audience that has an appreciation for what I am saying. Bottom line Josh, JS is right in the other Byron Blog. The Byron is not Augusta. and the Byron is not a Golf competition to draw fans anymore, it’s a social gathering for locals, to drink and watch each other. Yes there are some avid golfers that enjoy watching the tournament, but I honestly feel the cost does not justify the treatment there. If you take away anything from this, take away that Corporate business has reserved at least 80% of the 18th hole. 17 is next. 5 & 9 are fantastic locations but so small for the fans that the quality of being there live vs. watching on TV, I’ll take TV. This way I can sit at the house by my pool, drink my home brewed beer, look at my georgeous wife’s ***’s, and appreciate the game. The only thing I’ll be missing is watching the Pro’s practice without my coffee. Thanks Josh, “I appreciate ya”
