1. Stars 4, Ducks 1. Series over. I guess we’ve entered the part of the year where I act like I care about hockey. Which means [flipping through Ziggy day-to-day desk calendar]–yes! My week of caring about Texas Rangers baseball is coming up soon.
2. Mayor Tom Leppert is leading a trade delegation to China. Or protesting the Summer Olympics. Or fulfilling the ancient Chinese prophecy that a man from the West with magical over-sized hands–known colloquially as 人用看起来象剪刀的手–will lead them to victory over the dreaded 老鷹以熊的頭 (it’s essentially an eagle with the head of a bear). I’m fairly certain it’s one of those three things.
3. I don’t have anything specifically to link for this one. (Unless you count this.) Yesterday I was in downtown around 2, 2:30 and nothing was really open. Not a surprise. I know there’s no one down there on a Sunday. But here’s my question: why would anyone go downtown on a Sunday if not much is open? Bigger, related question: can downtown be truly viable–as a place to live or even visit–if it keeps such Andy-and-Opie hours?
I have never figured out why Neiman’s doesn’t open Sundays and serve brunch in the Zodiac.
Urban Market is the only place open on Sundays as far as I know. Wish some other places would get with it.
The same can be said for Front Burner, no? Yesterday I was surfing the web around 2:30 and nothing was really interesting…. I know there’s no one at the DMag office on Sunday (or is there). But here’s my question: why does the Front Burner blog keep such Andy-and-Opie hours?
Back to you Zac.
Went to a matinee (1 of 2 that day) at the Majestic a few Sundays ago. Hundreds of people, with no place narby to go after the show. But rents are too high to stake on a ebb-and-flow market, several have tried and have seen their investment die.
“nearby”
For those who live and play in the CBD there will be a very important meeting of DowntownDallas.org at the Merc- Thursday (24th) starting at 6:30.
We will be addressing a number of issues dealing with the continuing revitalization and improvement of Downtown.
The meeting will be a good opportuntiy so take advantage.
I Found Bacon: Using my own words against me? Ah, curse you and your devilish wit. Well played. I have no defense for the might of cut-and-paste.
Farmer’s Market is open and so is the Dallas Public Library (although I don’t think you had this in mind.)
Id: True, and going to Farmer’s Market on Sundays is one of my favorite things to do in the city. More people should do so.
Apparently you have to get up earlier than that to enjoy the sounds of progressive urban development.

Porta di Roma at Elm and Ervay is open on Sunday’s, as well as Sol Irlande’s on Main. Iron Cactus has a brunch menu on Sunday’s.
The arts district is great on a Sunday afternoon, specifically the Nasher…
I met Mayor Leppart a couple of weeks ago. Knowing that he was going to be attending the same function as I, I expected to see these reputed scissorhands.
His fingers aren’t particularly long for a man his height. You guys are overstating the fact. His hands looked perfectly-normal sized for a man of his height. Leave him alone; at least he’s not governing the city in the slash-and-burn style so popular with is predecessor.
Downtown Dallas just won’t be viable until 20,000 people live there. Re-defining it by including the Arts District and Victory Park doesn’t count.
The City of Dallas should rebate property taxes to anyone willing to own/live downtown. Reward enough “pioneers” and maybe it will turn around. Retail will not work and people will never feel safe without 20,000 neighbors.
Zac, I’m using your words in congruence to a Dallas mindset that has bothered me since I was a kid living through the blue laws here. Why is Downtown Dallas “closed” on Sundays? It doesn’t have to be.
I think Downtown D’s Sunday sparsity is the result of generations of bible belt conditioning. Sunday = Tithe. Flow the dollars and minds in to the places of worship by limiting the amount of local commerce and fun around town.
Question is, why is Front Burner “closed” for the weekend? It doesn’t have to be. You can post blog entries from any iPhone or email capable device, should the urge arise, right?
Regardless of the value my $.02 brings, thanks very much to all DMag bloggers. You are very much appreciated.
Mark: Downtown is safe as far as I am concerned and I did get a cut on my taxes.
You should have come to Main St. on Saturday night… tons of people walking everywhere. All the restaurants and bars were full.
I moved to the CDB last May and I can tell you things have picked up since then.
Point taken IFB. Prepare for weekend ramblings. If I remember.
Id’s comment: “Farmer’s Market is open and so is the Dallas Public Library (although I don’t think you had this in mind.)”
Thanks for the suggestion, but if I want to indulge my fetish of watching homeless men pee on the library’s magazine rack, I’ll just log onto the ‘net.
Sure Puddin’Tane - Saturday Night. It’s not safe until it’s that way every night. 20,000 people living there is the only thing that will make a difference. Most people avoid Downtown because they’re afraid and they will be until there are enough “eyes on the streets.”
