The movie rental dinosaur just might pull off that whole “reinvention/rebirth” thing after all. Blockbuster made an unsolicited bid for Circuit City. This, on top of the recent news of set-top boxes for direct movie downloads. Nice.

Oh, so this will be like Best Buy, but you can rent AND buy movies. What a great idea…
“Blockbuster Chief Executive James Keyes said combining the companies would create a chain that could sell portable devices and entertainment for them, much like Apple Inc.’s stores.”
Hmm. This makes me wonder whether Mr. Keyes has ever stopped into an Apple store, or whether he is perhaps experiencing dissociative episodes.
Blech. Circuit City is not worth having and Blockbuster doesn’t have the cash it would take. It’s Prodigy buying Compuserve.

Don’t mistake activity for progress.

They couldn’t get a deal done to buy the Hollywood Video chain a few years ago, and they missed the opportunity to buy Netflix when they had the chance. Why would anyone believe they can pull this one off?

I hope they keep the worst located Circuit City (off 75 and Meadow?) if/when this goes down. I like to drive by and wonder if anyone ever really goes in there.

AJ, the 75/Meadow Circuit City is not long for this world; word is it will be closing once the new store opens at Park and 75 in the new Park Lane Place mixed-use development going up across from NorthPark.
Having said that, there’s usually decent traffic in that store; not great, but not dead either.

I think you got it wrong Adam, Circuit City is probably going to end up being the Gimbles of the electronics world. And set top boxes, are you freakin nuts? I have my receiver, and XBox 360 already, some people have seperate DVD players plus a Tivo. Where’s it gonna go, Apple’s TV top box is a flop so far and pretty soon we’ll be streaming movies to our XBoxes or PS3s. Blockbuster is pissing away money with set tops.

BBI is down 11% on the news.
