U.S. Senators couldn’t help. Oprah couldn’t help. Bill O’Reilly couldn’t. Even Kid Rock failed. (Wait, Kid Rock?) But the senior Perot stepped up and ensured that America’s last surviving First World War vet will have a place Arlington National Cemetery. Well played, sir.

Doesn’t surprise me — I work at Perot Systems and often see examples of the man’s humbleness and respect for correctness. Good job, Mr. Perot.
That Ross Perot! Seems he’s also stepping up to help simple American folks get their due. Whether it’s an American hero like this man or a single mother who hates her ex-husband, Mr. Perot is an equal opportunity benefactor.
A true ambassador for what’s good about our City. But I just want to hear from Mr. Buckles about his secret to long life. 107? Amazing.
To be fair though, Mr Buckles does not meet the criteria to be buried at Arlington. You must have been Killed In Action or be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor or be awarded a Purple Heart plus a Navy/Air Force/Distinguished Service Cross or a Silver Star. Many, many famous and influential people over the last 40 years or so have tried to have their final resting place as Arlington only to be turned away. It is a very special place where only the best of America’s best can call home.
Stockton: GRIDLOCK!
I understand Bill and agree, but I think being the last living vet is reason enough.
The weight of that alone should be reason enough to pause and think about a few things more important than the price of gas.
The whole point is that by offering a place at Arlington to the last surviving U.S. veteran of that conflict, you aren’t just honoring him - you’re honoring ALL of the U.S. veterans of that war. Bill’s comments about Mr. Buckles are correct from an individual standpoint, but it doesn’t sound to me like the intention is to just honor this one man. It’s honoring the thousands and thousands of other WWI vets who couldn’t be buried there. Bravo, Mr. Perot. Bravo.
This almost makes up for Perot getting Clinton elected.
Wait. No, it doesn’t.
DA,
Arlington is not about honoring all Americans. If you have been to as many graveside funerals there as I have, the point is driven home big time. The gravestones are memorials to personal self sacrifice to a cause greater than their own. Each grave is a national monument to that individual.
It is a very special place with very special people buried there who have made sacrifices far greater than just outliving everyone else.
He could be buried at virtually any other National Cemetery. For free.
I’m worried that making concessions like this will open the door to more people wanting to be buried there who do not belong. There are alot of people who hold my view. RFK being buried at Arlington is a similar example of someone not meeting the criteria for burial. He does not belong there. Cold truth. If he had stayed in the Navy longer and not dropped out of training then I would not have a problem.
Everyone buried there is First Among Equals.
