I’m sorry to learn that local freelance photographer Juan Pulido, “Johnny” as his friends call him, recently fell while on a shoot and broke his back. To make matters worse, he has no insurance to pay his medical bills. So tomorrow a group of local artists have put together a fundraiser that will include a bitchin’ silent auction of their work. Details: Brokeback Fundraiser, Saturday, April 5 from 2 - 6 PM at the Opening Bell Coffee, located in the basement of the South Side on Lamar Lofts (1409 S. Lamar). For more info or to make phone donations: 469-2333-2534; 214-454-6270. Music by IRas Mali; food by Texas Caribbean Foods. Artists donating work after the jump.
About the Artists

By using cut-outs from early children’s books I try to portray how society in the 1960s would have reacted to events occurring in the world today. As a child, growing up in the 60s and 70s, life appeared simple and trouble-free. As I grew I realized this was not reality. I attempt to create a story or fairy-tale-like image emulating life as being as difficult and complicated in the past decades as it is today. In a way, they show an awakening of my childhood self as I realized more about the rest of the globe.
Amy Halko
Amy Halko’s porcelain vessels combine beautiful colors and patterns with functionality. Made for the table, her pots offer moments of surprise as one discovers decorated interiors and undersides. Amy moved to Dallas in 2002 after receiving her MFA in Ceramics. She has been teaching ceramics around Dallas, most recently at SMU.
Jen Rose
Jen Rose has been working in ceramics and other media for the past 10 years. She is currently reglazing prefabricated dinnerware and tiles with hip, one-of-a-kind drawings and small edition prints. Jen Rose is represented by Road Agent Gallery.
Johnny is such a talented artist, not to mention also a good friend!!! Please everybody come out and support him — he can’t work now, either. No work - no pay. And MANY THANKS to all who are contributing — OPENING BELL COFFEE, Texas Caribbean Foods, RAS MALI, and ALL THE WONDERFUL ARTISTS who are making this possible (many more than are mentioned here). Let’s support them too!! They have all given their time and efforts to help big-time.
Looking forward to the art auction and music as we all support Johnny in his time of need. This is God’s work and a blessing for his friends to all come together in such a time of need. “You can always judge the quality of a persons heart by the things that he or she does for those that can do nothing for them” Author unknown

Johnny has been a great friend now for almost 10 years. I have been in his position years ago breaking my back. It was very difficult getting back on my feet but with the help of family and friends, it was much easier. That is what we all are here for, to get Johnny through this rough time. And what better way than expressing this through Art, friends, family, music, food and drink. See you at the OBC!
Wow! I had no idea all these guys were contributing art. There is going to be some great stuff at this auction. My deepest thanks goes out to everyone participating to make this happen. I can’t wait to see everyone Saturday!

Johnny is like a brother to me. We are best friends, business partners and we both have taught at North Lake College for years. We’ve been through a lot together. So on March 5th, when he called me from the hospital and told me that he had fallen off a ladder, I was extremely worried. Then the news came that he had broken his back and foot and that he would be out of work for around 9 months. I wasn’t really sure what to do. My mom (Glynda Mekonen) came up with the idea of having a small fundraising party at her house, which has snowballed into what we have now! A tribute to a great coworker, photographer, teacher and most of all friend! Please come out and join us. It should be a lot of fun. You can’t go wrong with great art, music, food and friends! Thank you.
I am so excited about this event! I am sincerely grateful for Johnny. He has always been there for me in my times of need. So I want to do the same! Thank you to all the artists, supporters, and friends for participating! This is sure to be an amazing event that no one will forget!

I don’t know Juan personally, but based on information passed on from Glynda Mekonen I would be happy to make a donation to help someone in need. Thanks Glynda for stepping forward with this effort and showing us all how to give BIG. Wishing Juan a Speedy recovery.
For those of us who might be unable to make the auction, is there another way (Paypal, etc.) to make a monetary donation?
To “That other other guy” — Call me (Glynda) at 214-454-6270 and I can give you his Paypal info.
Johnny is so talented and has the best sense of humor. Thanks to all of the event organizers for showing him how important he is to all of us. And thanks to Johnny for always making me laugh!
