Chaos At The 23rd Senatorial District Convention

Reports are that the Clintonites have been challenging delegates since 8 a.m. this morning, so the convention hasn’t even started yet. Delegates with children are starting to leave, which could seriously erode Obama voting strength. Meanwhile, reports from the 26th 16th indicate all is going (sorta) smoothly.

Calling it a cluster **** is an understatement. Got there at 8 a.m. Left at 5 p.m. because I saw no end in sight and have AFI tickets. Other precincts were actually caucusing ALL DAY. That was the hold up. Will be very interesting in seeing how this plays out.

But District 23 raised $6,300 for cactus juice and Earl Campbell hot links, so they got that going for them.

At the 16th held inside Moody Coliseum the only two interesting things of note were:

-A slight scuffle outside by some men representing the Nation of Islam vs. New Black Panthers.

-Shannon Bailey opening the convention spending a solid 5 minutes(on the microphone, on stage after delivering the invocation) trying to explain why he was arrested by the Dallas Police Department at White Rock Lake last year for public lewdness. Ewww.

Can’t make that stuff up folks.

I was at the 23rd Convention, and also saw no end in sight. What time did things finally get resolved? Or did things get resolved?

It isn’t exactly true that “the Clintonites have been challenging delegates since 8 a.m.” Rather, the Credentials Committee started its work at 8am. That work included two major jobs: (1) working one-by-one through the challenges that had been received in writing by the deadline a few days before and (2) seating or not seating the many, many people whose delegate/alternate status could not be determined at regular check-in. I felt very sorry for the people who waited in the auditorium at Hulcy; they had arrived looking forward to the convention, but many had to wait there for hours and hours while the Credentials Committee worked its way through the challenges or the names one at a time. The irony was that the long delay at the Credentials Committee caused a long delay at the convention; even those in the convention could do nothing but wait while those trying to get in were considered by Credentials. (I applaud the members of Credentials for making it through a long, trying day.)
My hope is that from now on the presidential delegate percentage allocation process will end the night of the Democratic Primary. That is, the number of delegates for each candidate will be known definitively by Primary night, while the names of individual delegates will be determined by the caucus system. Now, every decision must be fought over at every step by every (both in this case) campaign. That continual need for each campaign to maximize its delegate count at every step is what gums up the works and makes each decision, big or small, contentious. (Some activists would only agree with my position if the primaries in Texas were closed or semi-closed. For some reason, Democrats don’t appreciate Republicans helping decide their nominee.)

2nd caucus finally happened at 7:30 last night. My precinct actually picked up Obama delegates as a couple of Clinton delegates had to take off.

I should note that “Chaos” does not apply at all. The SD23 convention was well organized but was slow because of the record number of people (especially new people) participating. Even the number of people was handled well inside the convention because of all the check-in stations and volunteer help. The leadership of the convention, Senator Royce West and Ken Molberg, know what they are doing and they had many dedicated people volunteering to help them, but they couldn’t magically make the credentials process disappear. The only problem inside the convention was boredom and not knowing when each next step would start. It was the unfortunate people who had to go through credentials who really suffered, but even there it was nothing like chaos. At the Credentials Committee there was sometimes a lack of communications, and tempers flared a few times because of that and the waiting, but the work was slowly accomplished. The Credentials Committee, under the leadership of Gary Fitzsimmons and Ruth Wyrick, did a great job considering the difficult circumstances. It was not the committee’s fault that so many challenges had been submitted or that so many people had problems with check-in. The problems at check-in were almost all the result of what may more fairly be called the chaotic individual precinct caucuses–too many precincts reported their results in a very poor fashion or not at all.

A friend had a question about my posts, so I realize I should have prefaced my comments with more information.

The SD23 convention was really held in two buildings: (1) the DISD facility called Ellis Davis Field House (which I assume is mostly used for basketball games with large attendance since it had maybe 8,000+ seats) and (2) Hulcy Middle School which is across a large parking lot and across the street from the field house. All Credentials and Nominations Committee work was done at Hulcy while the convention proper was held in the field house.

My friend says that the break down of the sign-in tables into small alphabetical groupings was very well organized. For example, offering a table for “Wa-Wh” instead of just having, say, “W-Z.” And each sign-in table had plenty of volunteers.

    OakCliff,

It is absolutely true that the Clintonites’ challenges to Obama delegates constituted approximately 95% of the challenges the Credentials Committee had to work through. It is also true that the Clinton campaign targeted SD 23 for the most challenges.

Do we really want to elect a candidate whose campaign is so hell-bent on disenfranchising voters, especially African-American voters, who make up a substantial percentage of SD 23?

    I think not.

The Obama doesn’t exactly have clean hands, folks.

    sound familiar

I’m glad this caucus debacle is finally coming to light. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out why Obama is only winning in caucus states. I was excited about Texas because it had both a primary and a caucus and I wondered how the media would explain the inevitable contradiction.

Well, the media just ignored it, so thanks Kim for trying to get the word out. And don’t worry about the Obama a-holes and their hate-mongering, they’re just taking a break from mugging senior citizens, screw em.

That is probably right Rosebud…I want to know why there are caucuses in the first place….It seems like a way to give the working class a kick in the nuts, cause they have to be at work in the morning, and cant participate….

Obama’s campaign is showing its Chicago root. It’s a shame that they will go so low. Obama will lose in an actual election, but he will hijack the Democratic Party for his ego trip. Hope Hillary kicks some asses.

Obama is a scumbag and he has scumbags working for him, some of you people commenting here should get your ignorant heads out of your stinking butts.

Hey benastoner, I am reporting you for the foul language….You need to grow up

    Owner of this video- beware!
Obamanation soldiers’ full time job is to find info against Obama then use the comments section to deny it while at the same time trashing Hillary and accusing her of spreading what they call lies.
Do not be used! Check every day and when you find the Obamanator re-working your video, return the favor and remove their Hill bashing from your comments section.
This is how Obamanation is being built, not on his record but on turning it against her instead!

There is a big difference between having opinions and systemantically scouring the internet in a conspiracy to thwart positive comments.
How much is he paying you to do this? Your Obama says pretty words then sends out his Obamanators to build a decietful Obamanation NEVER- I will switch to Mc Cain first!
If you can’t win fair- then you are a loser !

I was at the 23rd all day and left around 8 p.m. There was a lot of chaos, but I think that was to be expected given the crowds. Everyone in my area sat patiently for the most part. I was there as a Hillary supporter. I have to say that I stupidly fell for an Obama trick call. I showed up at 10 a.m. instead of 9 a.m. because someone called me and told me that was the time I needed to go. I didn’t realize that was going on or I would have been more suspicious. It didn’t end up making a difference because they were accomodating everyone who was on the list and there others arriving at the same time who were checked in.

We had the same cluter**** in Lubbock, TX with various shady actions by Clinton folks left and right. Sad to see that the incompetence of our local organizers was not an isolated incidence.
