Results of the Great Backyard Bird Count Are In!

billandhill.jpgAttention fellow twitchers! The numbers are in! More than 85,000 checklists were completed during this year’s Great Backyard Bird Count. An all-time record by several thousand! And a record 635 species. Most frequently reported bird? The Northern Cardinal. The most numerous bird in America? The Snow Goose. State reporting the most species? TEXAS, with 333! Locality reporting the most species? Corpus Christi with 185. You can view the (anemic) Dallas report here. (Only 33 mockingbirds? Please.) My report, including my bluebirds Bill and Hillary (pictured), here.

Nancy, thanks for the report. Your twitcher posts are always a welcome palate cleanser from the regular FB diet. I have two questions:

    1. Do you (or any of your readers) know of any local/state bird blogs from individuals that post regular sightings/pictures?

    2. What is your camera configuration? Your pictures are always excellent and I’m curious about the brand/lens in front of the talented eye.

    Thanks for your time,
    r

A guy by the name of JR Compton has a blog that covers his daily trips to White Rock Lake and his behavior oriented photographs of the birds he sees.

Thanks for your thanks. The Audubon Dallas Bird Talk is a great site for local sightings and photography. I use a Canon Rebel XT (SLR)and for this shot I used a EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM lens. I was also hiding in a bush about 20 feet away. I have the fire ant bites to prove it.
    Join Audubon, they’re great.

I too love your posts. I guess I need to invest in a rocker, binoculars and spend a bit more time on the feeders. Oh, and hide the cats, eh?

    JR’s “stuff” is great.

For those interested the Audobon Society will be leading some guided hikes at the new Dogwood Canyon site, which is on the White Rock Escarpment. mi esposa y me have signed up for the one on April 5. This is a really unique area, which is habitat for the golden cheek warbler.

Great shots. Thanks for sharing them. Man, I’ve heard lots of Mockingbirds while walking the Katy Trail at lunch.
