Mr. Shelby, Grand Marshal of the Woodrow 75th Parade a few years ago (driving his Cobra), has often said he started racing to ‘get away’ from celebrated principal G.L. “Pop” Ashburn. Mr. Shelby graduated in 1940 and Mr. Ashburn was principal from the school’s opening in 1928 to 1956.

I have met many famous Woodrow alums but I can tell you it was a special thrill meeting Mr. Shelby. There were several of ‘his cars’ in that parade revving their engines along Glasgow Drive.
