Precinct 2216 (East Dallas): My Mother Is a Delegate

My mom, a retired school teacher by the name of Terri Muldoon, has just returned from her caucus, where not only did she offer a resolution but she was chosen as a delegate. Her report:

Precinct 2216, Democrat of course, had a picture-perfect caucus. It was much like a giant block party, surrounded by people who believed in the same things I did. Granted, some were a little more extreme but all pretty much agreeing on the basics. Like, “God, we need some big changes in our government!”

Most of us started gathering around 6:30 in the school foyer and were let in by precinct number. My one-block-long street had at least half the residents there! And out of 2,200 registered Dems, more than 220 stayed through the whole process of choosing delegates according to Hillary (yeah!) or Obama. Robert’s Rules were very strictly adhered to, even when one disgruntled caucusee objected to late-comers getting to sign in.

After a couple of hours of verifying signatures, here’s how the delegates came out: 14 for Obama, 12 for Hillary. We go to the regional caucus on March 29. At the very very end, resolutions may be introduced. I suggested the Social Security Fairness Act and it was unanimously voted “yes.”

I loved this democracy in action! All races, all ages, both sexes, all friendly and all involved. We are America and now we know lots more of our neighbors who will make a difference. But it is a long time to wait for dinner.

Feel free to edit. I just rambled as things occurred to me. I’m special; I’m a delegate.

Holy crapstick…Fox just showed Arlington live. They’re still waiting to caucus.

Aaaaaaaaaaand they’re talking to Karl Rove. My buzz is totally gone.

Major problems tonight at the Indian Hills Recreation Center, Precinct 3549. 23/23 delegates were going to be awarded to Obama. Chair announced herself a Clinton supporter and said she was “taking the sheets home to correct them.” She was screaming and yelling and folks tried to physically restrain her and take the packet from her, but couldn’t. Someone was videotaping the whole thing.

I was at 2216 last night as well. It went pretty much as described here, except for a brief shouting match between two Clinton supporters about re-opening the sign-in.

Crazy guy in Cowboy hat mad about the motion to re-open sign-ins:
“The motion was already passed to close the sign-ins!”

Unsigned-in Poor Parent guy, to Crazy Cowboy hat guy:
“Well, I propose a motion to institute breathalizer screening before the caucus!”

Admittedly that was paraphrasing. But it was just as hilarious.

Hey, if you’re talking about Bob with the keyboard, don’t be a jerk. He’s got mental issues.
