According to ESPN.com’s Marc Stein–who is Dallas-based, by the way–the Mavericks are close to finalizing a trade that would, ahem, net them New Jersey point guard Jason Kidd and either Malik Allen or Darrell Armstrong in exchange for Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, Desagana Diop, and a spare part or two. This after Mark Cuban has repeatedly insisted a deal wouldn’t happen and that those suggesting it would should “step away from [their] crack dealer.” Huh. I have some thoughts. Jump!
UPDATE: The trade is apparently all but confirmed. Great success!
I think even the most optimistic Mavs fans (me included) who believed the team’s recent struggles stemmed more from injuries than anything else realized the Mavs needed some kind of shakeup. And that said shakeup would cost them either Harris or Josh Howard. I like Jason Kidd. A lot. Is he the answer? Maybe.
My real problem with the trade is that it leaves the team without much depth in the frontcourt, at a time when two of the Mavs’ prime rivals (the Suns and Lakers) had bolstered their squads in that area, and their other roadblock (the Spurs) still had Tim Duncan. Diop had regressed this season, but he looked to be coming out of it a bit in recent weeks. If this trade goes through, the team needs to make another deal that helps them there. If nothing else, they need six smartly deployed fouls to work with.
Can they do this? Absolutely. They still have the mid-level exception available, so they could offer that to, say, P.J. Brown, who I think still has a little bit in the tank, and is made for seven-game playoffs series. Or they could try to put together a package for Indiana’s Jeff Foster (Trenton Hassell and Juwan Howard, with one of their unsigned picks) works under the salary cap, though that deal might have to be salted to taste.
Long story short (too late), I like it, as long as there’s another move or two connected.
To quote Rusty Ryan from Ocean’s Twelve, “Look, it’s not in my nature to be mysterious. But I can’t talk about it and I can’t talk about why.” Let’s just say that I know, with 100 percent accuracy, that Charles Barkley loves this trade.
Well I hate it.
Holy crap.
I love it! Kidd AVERAGED a triple double in the playoffs last year and has like 12 this year alone. Devin only has 1 game with 10 or more assists, Kidd averages 10.5. Dirk and Josh are in their primes NOW so great move! As fans we should be happy the Mavs goal and only goal is to win the championship…this trade gives them a much better chance in the next couple years to do just that.
Is Charles a Mavs fan or foe?
Hated the trade until I heard about New Jersey buying out Stackhouses contract (which explains the $3 million the Mavs are shipping in the deal as well).
The Mavs and Stack will have to wait 30 days until they reunite (which gives Stack time to heal).
Also, the Mavs absolutley make another deal before the deadline to fill in the lost roster spots.
That being said, I can’t wait to see Juwan get some serious minutes tonight against Portland (tee, hee).
I wonder how many times we’re gonna have to hear the “We’re going to turn this team around 360 degrees” quote from various new outlets once this is a done deal.
(So help me God if someone else submits this while I’m typing and I repeat a comment…)
Mavs = Memphis and NJ = LA Lakers. This is an awful deal — we now have a 35 year old PG with no adequate backup, no back up at center (please don’t tell me you are going to slide Dirk or Bass over to play center during the playoffs), two guards who can’t hit a shot this year, no first round draft picks, a chance at resigning Stack (big whoop). Not only can you write this year off, you have closed the door on the future by dealing Harris for Kidd — there aren’t that many good PGs out there, and it’s not like we will be able to draft one now. Anyone want to buy some Mavs tickets?
^ I didn’t mean to keep the bacon vodka url, but hey, why not spread the word.
Nobody is mentioning the TWO first round draft picks we are sending to the East coast. Definitely think New Jersey got the sweeter deal on this one. I’m seriously questioning the Mavs ability to even make the playoffs in this, their “window” year.
Folks, we really tend to overrate players on the teams we love. Like Devin. Like Diop. Like Stack. I mean, I love Stack, but he’s an injury-riddled ballhog on offense who is shooting under 40 percent. Jason Kidd turned an average player like Richard Jefferson into an all star. He will make this team so much better, it’s not even funny. Watch, for example, what he’ll do with an athletic hustle guy like Brandon Bass, not to mention the open shots he’ll create for Terry and Dirk. I like the trade. Plus, I don’t think the Mavs are done dealing. I hate giving up 2 1st rounders and Harris. Bet Stack comes back. But, Diop blew this year, George asked to be traded and Ager is a failed bit (see ya; thanks for eff’n nothing).
Sorry but anyone that thought the Mavs were going to win it all this year with current roster hasn’t watched games in past two weeks. It wasn’t going to happen folks.
AJ likes the trade.
First off RJ is not an average player. Average=Jason Kapono/DeShawn Stevenson/Luke Walton.
Kidd made the players around him better because they had no qualms taking the ball to the hoop. These Mavs love to settle for the jumper, thats why Devin and to a small extent stack were important because they didnt mind taking the ball inside. If the Mavs can add another athletic wing then that will help their cause.
I do know at the moment Rockets and Spurs fans are thrilled. You know why? Devin Harris had his way with both teams, all day every day. Who’s gonna guard Tony Parker now? Kidd, JET? HAHA.
Kidd can create all the open shots for JET and Dirk but that ain’t bringing a title to Dallas. What happens when the shots stop falling. Plus the mavs need to add a dependable big in the 5 spot thats not as injury prone as damp.
absolutely right, franco. devin did a great job against parker. unfortunately we didn’t see parker in the playoffs last year, mainly because a slower, more physical point by the name of baron davis absolutely destroyed devin and terry both. kidd can cover the bigger points much better than devin, and can hold his own against the smaller ones just fine.
love this trade.
I like how we keep fighting the last war. The GSW loss last year sucked, but until Dirk decides that he’s not going to be a big pv$$y out on the floor anymore, the rest of it’s just window dressing.
start planning the parade now, as your beloved mavs are getting to fold up and quit once again in the playoffs
BTW: For those who hate the trade, you’ll wanna read the great (but wrong in this case) John Hollinger [insider only]:

good grief thats a lot to give up for a 35 year old point guard. they darn well better hope they get stack back, but even so, i dont see the mavs having enough depth and speed to make it back to the finals. it takes more than 5 people…even more than 6. you got to have at least 2 bigs. and dirk doesn’t count. he totally blew that boston game by falling asleep and letting freaking rajon rondo (who?!) get the game winning rebound.
how many years you gonna get out of kidd, maybe 2? and now you got no draft picks left to find a replacement…better hope theres a free agent available.
Dear Devean George,
I love you.

I am glad Devean blocked the trade, but doing it so he could keep his “Larry Bird rights”? There’s a reason those are called Larry Bird rights and not “spare who couldn’t get anyone to sign him last summer so who the he-double hockey sticks does he think is going to bust the cap for him in the future” rights.
