By “all UT students live in dorms with cameras, etc.” simply means that -of- the students living in the dorms, all live in dorms where those things are present.

The same article has a chart showing safety when measured by actual crime rather than preventive measures. SMU ranks 74 on that list, I wonder why SMU’s website didn’t mention both charts.

Interesting list, but as always, statistics can’t paint any story you like.

I went to a non-Texas school that’s up on the list (in the 60s), and it doesn’t have dorm attendants or cameras simply because crime doesn’t happen (call us naive). Our library isn’t protected by security sensors because they determined that to install and maintain a system would be more expensive than simply replacing the very few books which go unaccounted for each year.

And it’s not unusual to see a sign affixed to the sidewalk which reads: “money found here yesterday afternoon… call XXX with amount to reclaim”.

And we have unproctored, self-scheduled final exams.

The beauty of an honor code in which students believe.

(Oh, and yes, my institution did have the distinct safety advantage of being situated in a small town and away from the very real crimes of the city.)

Funny that it says _all_ UT students live in dorms with cameras, self-lock doors, etc. Because _most_ UT students don’t live on campus. Even most of the dorm dwellers live in private dorms that aren’t on campus.
