OK, 117 million of us are getting a check ($600 per individual, $1,200 for couples) as part of the federal stimulus package, right? And, while we all “support” our U.S. troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s widely acknowledged that few of us civilians have sacrificed anything in the war effort, right? OK, so how about if we start a national campaign to turn over the free dough we’re about to get from the feds to the individual soldiers who’ve fought, or are fighting, on our behalf in the Middle East? Strictly voluntary, of course. Would any of our military-supporting local Congress members (Sessions? Johnson?) be willing to jump-start coordinating such a mammoth undertaking (probably through a private-sector fundraising administrator)? Your comments appreciated.
Why should I waste my beautiful mind on something like that?
Some of us might actually need our government stimulus money.
I’m cashing mine in singles, and rolling around in it.
The people who could afford to give the rebate money away, aren’t getting any of it…
Teachers can only claim $250 in personal moolah spent on classroom materials on their taxes. Ask any teacher… we spend way more than that in any given year. So, you know, I don’t really feel so bad about getting some money back to pay off the ‘ol credit card. I’ll be happy to have my students continue to make cards and write letters, though.

How about this? You take the money you make from ads for one month and send that to the troops. Some feel we are in a recession because of this war. Why doesn’t D Magazine name it Best War and people will visit it more. IJS
The alleged purpose of the rebate is to stimulate the economy. The argument is as soon as receive this money (which won’t be until some time this summer) we will go out and spend it, thus giving the economy a boost. I’m not sure sending the money to troops overseas would have the same effect.
Pete: The troops overseas have families in the United States of America.
It’s a nice sentiment, but I was just looking at my paystub…and the ridiculous amount of money that goes to them in taxes anyway. I don’t have the money, personal accountants or tax shelters that many of the “D” readers have. You know who you are…
Anyway, I don’t see it as a gift. It’s my freaking money in the first place…
