Sweet Jessica Jones alerts me to this story about my beloved Whole Foods 86ing disposable plastic bags at its checkouts. Coincidentally, when I was at WhoFo on Lemmon yesterday getting my daily loot of big spring water and ginger cookie, the cashier gave me a 3-cent refund for declining a bag. According to this, I should have pressed for 7 cents more. I love green.
Yes, you should have pressed for the 7 cents. The wheels of societal change are greased by the coin. Besides, that’s 7 cents that could go to good use!
nothing green about it at all. plastic bags are made from petrochemicals. the price of oil and natural gas the feedstocks for plastic bags has shot through the roof. thus the cost of plastic bags has probably gone through the roof, too. So WhoFo is doing what any sensible company would do, reduce their expenses in order to protect their bottom line. The grocery business has one of the tightest profit margins around usually 2-3 cents per dollar. WhoFo is just putting a green spin on the decision and making it look like they are environmentally friendly
