Leading Off (Creepy Edition)

1) The local version of the story about MySpace’s agreement with dozens of attorneys general (excluded Texas’) on “protecting children” mentions the word “parent” three times and the word “responsibility” not at all. IJS.

2) And speaking of online shenanigans, it’s real clear from this story that none of Dallas’ city “top city officials” have ever set foot in Dallas public libraries. Way back in the old days (2006) I used to go to the main library across from city hall once a week to upload blog reports on city council meetings.  I was only there a matter of minutes each time, but aside from homeless guys taking hillbilly baths in the restrooms, one of the biggest nuisances was all the Internet users accessing stroke sites. Interesting offshoot of the tragedy of the commons — that’s what you get for providing for free what people should be paying for out of their own pockets.

3) Good lord.

The story about the library reminds of this song

The ALA is way off-base with their views.
Imagine how much money would be raised if the gentleman’s club tax were applied to the library computers

People should definitely have to pay for their own computers. And their own books and schools, too. Of course, don’t tell that to the loony lefties who want the nanny state to build their roads for them.

But no one should ever have to pay a dime to “upload blog reports on city council meetings.”

On a serious note for a change, want to hear something creepier? A local schoolteacher friend says that a growing trend among junior high and high school students is exhibitionism. These kids are “doing the deed” in front of their friends and total strangers, all in the name of fun apparently. What’s more disturbing is that it also takes place on school campuses, not just off campus somewhere. What is with these kids?

Anyone else in favor of home schooling?

When I was a kid growing up in the midwest, I used to love going to the central library. But I would never take my kids to the Dallas Central Library, if only because I don’t want to have to explain why the entryway always smells as if it’s urine-soaked.

I am really shocked to learn that there is pornographic material on the internets. What the heck was the Dallas library thinking when adding this new fangled service???!!! Has anyone heard of this before!?!?! Kudos to WFAA and the DMN for aggressively shining the spotlight on this obviously underground secret! I will have to write my local congressman about his immediately. Tell me is there some savvy “internetologist” that knows how to remove pornography from the internet?

Daniel, your post makes no sense at all. I’ll assume you only use private schools; and since you obviously don’t believe in social security, it’ll be great to put your part of the funds back in the general pool.

JB, there are “net nanny” filters that can pretty much block all porn websites. I’ve never been able to figure out why libraries don’t use them.

Julie, I thought it was fairly obvious that Daniel’s post was tongue in cheek.

Did Sgt. Murtaugh find the prostitutes because they happened to be daughters of his former army buddy? And where the hell was Riggs during all this?

  • Daniel

    Julie,

I was ribbing our resident libertarian, Trey. If you hadn’t picked up on that about him, you might have missed the subtle libertarian statement he slipped in there. (Apparently, our society would really soar if poor children never saw a computer. Because, you know, public education is socialism.)

He does this in virtually every post he makes. I’ll say one thing about libertarians, they pour one hell of a strong cup of Kool-Aid, it would appear.

All one has to do is look at the inset map in the Startlegram’s story to see what went wrong with these deviant delinquents…they clearly are from the OTHER side of the tracks.
