DMN’s Newest Blog: DISD

Just added this to my Google Reader, where Kent Fischer and Tawnell Hobbs will discuss all things about the Dallas school district. Already interested in the post about how Hinojosa wants to create some sort of “Career Academy” at every high school. We (and about half of Dallas, it seemed) toured Townview last week and talked to students, and if the academy idea is similar to the real-world experience the kids there receive, I’m all for it. (Shout out to the young woman who asked, “Are you Chris Daughtry?”)

Great idea. Wrong host. Until they improve their coverage of Dallas ISD in the print version and all Belo media (billboards, ads, commercials, WFAA….,) I and other active parents will be shunning their blog.

I’d reconsider if the ad revenue generated from the page were directed 100% to Dallas Education Foundation.

Add it to your Google Reader, Eric, but don’t read it! Please don’t submit anything because that would support its existence. Until The Dallas Morning News decides to report fairly about Dallas ISD, I am a member of “Boycott the Belo Blog.” Why should we support their blog and allow them to think they are appeasing those passionate about Dallas ISD by “inviting” us do their jobs when we add good news and positive stories to their blog? By reporting fairly I mean continuing their investigative reporting about public funds and spending, but also report on things that have improved, changed or have ALWAYS been superior for the education of Dallas’ children. Have their education reporters ever heard of “follow up?”

I agree. How about taking down the negative billboards about DISD. If Dallas Morning News wanted to help get the good word out about all the good going on in the district they wouldn’t be putting the good stories on page 2 and the negative and sometimes not reported correctly stories on the front page.
How about the DMN hiring some reporters in the education department who have children in DISD schools.

I was at a meeting last week where DMN editor Bob Mong encouraged us to view this site and use it as a venue to post positive stories for DISD — I presume since the News is responsible for posting only negative. After I looked at this blog, it appears to be more of the same from Kent Fischer. The postings are at best fodder for a snipe hunt. The continual front page assault on DISD by the news only hurts our schools and our community. There are great things happening at DISD and I will also encourage my friends and family to avoid adding to DMN advertising revenue until it becomes more balanced in reporting of the District.

I agree. All you ever hear from the DMN is how bad DISD is. The story yesterday on the front page was so minor but there it was another slap at DISD. A lot of good things are going on at the DISD and if the bigoted white power structure at the DMN would get off their collective asses and do some unbiased reporting it may help improve the communities view of DISD.
