Bad News at the Pump Means Good News for Your Local Movie Rental Company

That’s what Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes said today. He think the first quarter is going to be a good one because people don’t want to drive to the movie theaters and would rather rent DVD and stay at home. (Don’t they still have to drive to their local Blockbuster Media store, assuming they aren’t in the delivery program?) He also said the writer’s strike will boost rentals. With that, sir, I concur. And you don’t have to hit me upside the head with a giant American Gladiator Q-tip to say so.

I am predicting a second baby boom as a result of the writer’s strike.

So, I don’t want to drive to a movie theater (once!) but I do want to drive to Blockbuster once to rent a movie and again to return it? Hmmmmm.

The only real problem is that the writer’s strike probably won’t have as profound an impact on America’s desire to stay at home like 9/11 did. 9/11 affected America for years. People were staying close to home, watching/renting movies and as a result the stock prices of companies like Blockbuster 30+ midway through 2002, 3 now) and Movie Gallery (5 to 20 in the same span) soared.

While it’s unlikely the writer’s strike will end in the next few weeks, the moment it does people will instantly stop renting old shows on DVD and start watching new ones.

You forgot the part about 9/11 causing us to re-elect Darth Cheney and his pet chimp, from we begat slumps, chumps, and religious rumps.

Any “baby boom” happening in the Metroplex is due to the Escapade Clubs over off 35 and not to any writer’s strike.

Five words. High-def video on demand. Charter has it locally. Others are following suit.

It’ll get a shot in the arm by high gas prices and it’ll put a bullet in Blockbuster’s backside.
