Tom Hicks, What Do You Want for Christmas?

hicks.jpg(First in a series.) “Torii Hunter. He’s exactly the kind of ballplayer my Texas Rangers need. What’s that? Signed with the Angels? Hmmm. Let’s see. Hold on a sec. [muffled phone conversation with GM Jon Daniels] Where was I? Right. I was telling you why we had no interest in Torii Hunter. Anyway, what I want for Christmas is a hybrid chupacabra/centaur to patrol the moat around my mansion. Oh, and a new pair of Dockers. Size 38. I like a little room in the seat.”

I hate this guy as an owner. Seriously. I hate him. Not personally because it isn’t like I have ever made it across the moat, but as the owner of my beloved Texas Rangers: I hate him. Everyday, I hope to awake to a story about the Kop having strung him from the crossbar.

News Flash: if you are a fringe fan of the Rangers and mostly like to mock their futility, you will have a field day this year. Even the low-life diehards like myself realize that 2008 will not be good.

Tom Hicks needs to get rid of at least two of his teams. If he doesn’t have enough money to run the three of them properly, and pay for the appropriate personnel, then he needs to winnow it down to one team. Personally, I think he should have one really great Liverpool squad.

I should not even get involved here. I am a “seasoned” (very) baseball fan - and looked forward to retirement as the Rangers had been building THE team. I’ve watched over the last five years as all that “building” was traded, etc. We are left with our “Face” of the Rangers - no other comment on that. He does need to consentrate on Liverpool and take J.D. as his assistant.

Everyone in MLB will tell you the Angels overpaid for Hunter. He was probably worth $12-14M and some teams were willing to pay up to $15M. But the Angels coughed up $18M a year a year after paying $10M a year for Gary Matthews, Jr. Heck, even Torii Hunter himself said he would have signed with the Angels for less than that.

Plus, I think its been proven that money doesn’t buy you pennants and it doesn’t take money to win them. Remember the $49M Marlins in 2003 or the $55M Rockies this year?

    Oh, good lord…

Why does the image of those three men gathered together give me the worst case of the heebies I’ve had since I first saw that creepy dancing-Jerry-Jones commercial…?

No good can come from that collection of men. No good. Only darkness. And Clear Channel.
