Leading Off (Local Blog Edition)

1. Over on Blogmaverick, Mark Cuban announces he’s getting into the Facebook app biz, with something that looks a lot like an eBay competitor: Radical Buy.

2. Uncle Barky breaks down why you see more diet stories than interviews in sports bars (something about women and their watching habits) on local TV news.

3. And Alibaster K. Abthernabther gives us more gold: an open letter to Channel 8 sportscaster Dale Hansen regarding the annual airing of his “Thank God For Kids” video. A.K.A. (get it?) suggests other videos that Hansen should produce and have the Oak Ridge Boys score, including “Thank God For Puppies” and “Thank God For Mock Turtlenecks and Sports Coats.”

Anyone have any thoughts on how Wick is going to attack Cuban’s sanity and patriotism with this Radical Buy thing?

Surely Wick sees something un-American about innernet commerce. At least when Mark is involved.

  • Gwyon

James, wait until someone uses Radical Buy to sell a DVD of “Redacted.”

  • CDD

Aw, why did Alibaster change his profile photo? Now instead of looking like the Carver from Season 3 of Nip/Tuck he looks like some sort of rejected character idea from Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Boo.

That is an exceptional question and an astute and timely observation, CCD. It is as if an image that I had no right to use in the first place (Enid Dickson’s portrait of Charles Boyd as the Snob for the Borovansky Ballet’s 1951 production of “La Boutique Fantasque.”) has been replaced with a custom made mugshot that will not infringe on any copyright or proprietary ownership laws. Why would I do something like that?

  • Miss M

Dale getting called out on his chronic douchebaggery = greatness. I

  • Miss M

Whoops. I meant to add I *heart* AKA.

  • Daniel

The old mugshot put me in mind of a mollycoddled trust-fund-living 30-year-old “kid” who had succumbed to cocaine-induced psychosis and holed up in his Turtle Creek high-rise, firing off missives to the local media as the madness slowly took over. Ignatious Reilly + David Bowie + Saul Bellow protag = Alibaster K. Abthernabther.

The new one, on the other hand, doesn’t.

Ah well, we still have Wick.

  • Gwyon

The new mugshot evokes Snidely Whiplash.

Despite alleged heretofore penchants for douchebaggery, douchetasticness or even the oft maligned doucheholery, my query was not meant as a slight to the comment’s author but as a legitimate questioning of my reason. A little Tuesday morning mystery, if you will.

And Daniel, if you were any more right you’d be wrong.

Hmmm. Does anyone recall Frontburner guessing or even inquiring about the identify of Mr. AKA? Very suspicious, she says. The PCP blog (the city/bubble, not the drug) denied with authority that AKA is not Mr. Funny Guy, who has been notably absent from this blog. Perhaps it was the deadlines or he’s been asked to pull back by his chief, but perhaps not.

Surely FB would be a little inquisitive about AKA’s identity. You’d think they’d look at today’s Web server log files and see if they hint to the identity. Yes? No?

Double DANG! (sorry Nancy). Does their lack of inquisition mean AKA’s “big announcement” is a new column in a certain monthly city magazine? Well that would be a yawner.

    Discuss.

  • Alibaster K. Abthernabther

I can assure you I am not nor will I be in the empoy of this blog or its print parent, though not from lack of effort on the part of both parties. I am also not a “member of the media.” The call is not coming from inside the house. The announcement may provoke yawns but not for the reasons you suggest. Next?

  • Jon

Regardless of who Mr. Abthernabther is, his is the only local blog that remains consistently entertaining and worthy of my attention.

  • Bryce Pilaf

Well done, AKA. Like a fillet gone wrong at Al B’s.

  • GLM

    I think I love Alibaster.

  • TG

whoever he is, he skipped out on design class. pale blue type on black background = bloggy amateurism and permanent blindness. please oh please lighten her up

  • Alibaster K. Abthernabther

    …and done.

  • pak
