Tomorrow is not only the pinnacle of my gastronomic year, it is also the 70th birthday of Luke’s Locker founder (and ultimate cheerleader/papa bear) Don Lucas. In recognition of his contribution to the local running (and walking) community, and commitment to our fair city, some of his friends want to buy him a bench. So runners can, you know, sit down. Jump for the deets on how you can help.
For the past three years, we have been trying to raise enough funds to acquire a permanent bench at the Katy Trail dedicated to Don Lucas from all of us runners. The cost of setting up and maintaining a bench at the Katy Trail is $10,000. Don has worked to develop the Katy Trail for several years and has helped raise funds to build a second running trail there, separate from the cyclists. Now it’s time for us to ask for a contribution in support of acquiring this bench for Don. We would like to reach that $10,000 mark this year. Thus far we have raised $3,350. We are lucky to have a man of his caliber, who has run several marathons including Boston, to coach us through our aches and pains and get us ready for the marathon of our choice. With that in mind, please consider contributing. Donations should be sent to:

(Please be sure to mark on your check that the donation is for the Don Lucas Bench at the Katy Trail.)
Thanks for posting this, Stacey. Don deserves recognition for the impact he’s had on many lives, including my own.
I remember my first year of Dallas Fit training in 2002, when I got injured at Swiss and Texas and had to drag myself back to the Bathhouse. Everyone was done with their run and gone — except for Don, who waited for me (the last runner) to make it. What a gentleman!
Don is a Dallas legend, and this bench is but a small token we should place to honor him. He (and his family) deserve huge kudos for their support of local runners and running events. Plus, their store is a runner’s dream!
Thanks for posting, just sent my donation.
