Handicapping the Competition for New Observer Editor: Special Music Edition

I’m surprised we’re doing this again so soon. I figured we’d have to wait until whatever good Village Voice Media soldier was sent here to take over for Julie Lyons flamed out. Like, another four months or so. But since music editor Jonanna Widner was told to go outside and cut herself a switch, we’re back. So let’s get right to it. Well, right to it after the jump.

Noah W. Bailey: Noah has done fine, if somewhat sporadic, work for the music section over the past couple of years. He also seems to have a pretty solid handle on the local music scene. Additionally, it would be an easy transition, since he’s already in the paper’s employ co-running the Night & Day section. But for some reason, I don’t feel confident with this choice. (5/1)

Sam MachovechMachkovech: He’s clearly still interested in Dallas music, since he continues to post to his Big D Little D site while living in Seattle. But I have it on good authority that he ticked off the VVM folks early into his brief reign. So that’s not happening. (50/1)

Chelsea Ide: Other than the fact that she’s currently the DO’s web editor, and one of the main posters on their DC-9 at Night music blog, I don’t know much about Ms. Ide. Except that she seems to post virtually every press release and e-mail that crosses her transom. I think she’s fine where she is. (20/1)

Jim Schutze: It would be good timing, since it looks like that whole Deep Ellum/SUP thing is about to blow up. Plus Schutze is from Detroit. I believe it’s known as Rock City. Right? (3/1)

Me: Besides for the fact that I like it here and I like actually making money and paying bills on time, I’d just be a pale imitation of We Shot JR now that I’ve hit the advanced age of 33. Plus, I want to keep my options open in case I feel like making a futile run for office. But I’ll happily accept an offer to go out for drinks and talk about it. If they’re paying. (77/1)

Some unknown corporate soldier from the Cleveland Scene or some such who comes in with a swagger and little else: Seriously, always bet on this. Always. (2/1)

Zac Crain spelling my name correctly after knowing me for over five years: 1,000,000,000,000/1

  • Zac Crain

I’d place the odds higher than that. Be happy I can pronounce it.

Bring in the Stonedranger with a little assist from Sammy’s “Jasun”. I am not even sure that these guys actually exist, but I do know that you two guys have ridden off into the maturity sunset. If Noah gets the gig will he have to quit that Nappytime Shaketime or whatever the hell it is called?

I’d like to reiterate my vote for this guy:

I thought they’d already selected Celeste?

  • Jack Jett

In keeping with the mission of the Observer, I would think they might bring on Robert Sweet from Stryper. Not since their 1986 release of “To Hell With The Devil” has the music scene been so envigorated.

It’s true. I’m the new music editor. My audition was naming every Crowded House song while doing the Soulja Boy dance.

Watch him crank it, watch him roll - and don’t dream it’s over.

    My vote’s for The Hammer.

    You boys are funny…

Since music wasn’t her thing, maybe JW should apply for a job here: http://www.gardenandgun.com.
I’m giving holiday-gift subscriptions to all my hommies.
I mean, it was named “one of the 15 hottest magazine launches of the year.”

are there some Highlander “only one” rules that must be adhered to? why not Merritt Martin AND Noah? for realsies. but I’d assume they’d then try to pay them half as much. frowny face made from colon and open parenthesis.

Good call, Zac. They gave the gig to a 23 year old kid named Pete Friedman. Is he from around here?
