No More Pennies at Great American Hero
As I just discovered, before enjoying a no. 6 on white, no tomatoes, the sandwichery at Lemmon and Throckmorton is taking a bold stance against the penny: They’re getting rid of it. As the sign says, prices are rounded up or down to the nearest nickel. The edict is obviously and blatantly a marketing ploy just for the sake of publicity. It’ll never work. I mean, what media person is so hard-up for local, relevant, timely news that he’d deign to even post such a thing on a blog?

And how to they justify the taxes? The gov’t frowns on made up tax amounts that are just for convenience.
Will they accept pesos?
With debit cards, the one cent coin is becoming an unwanted asset. The government has talked about eliminating the one cent coin, but I’m afraid people would FREAK OUT.
[...] Remember yesterday, when I came back from lunch at Great American Hero on Lemmon Ave. and posted the “news” that the place had gone penniless? And remember how I jokingly said that the obvious publicity-seeking ploy would never work, which was ironic, see, ’cause I was publicizing it? Guess what. First of all, several people told me GAH has been doing that for months and months. (Yeah? Well it was news to me.) But a co-worker went there for lunch today and said WFAA had a media van there, for more than just lunch. He writes: Just got back from the ‘hero. Channel 8 was there doing video on them being penniless. Apparently they take all those pennies and put them in a big jar to give away, and someone stole it over the weekend. Didn’t recognize the reporter … said ch 8 on the video camera. [...]
I do believe that P.D. Johnson’s was the first to pioneer the no pennies policy. Or was that just Angie abrasively refusing people’s money? Either way, we had it first…
