For months, proponents of a film called 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama have been working toward showing the flick at Dallas’ Victory Park this Saturday, which Mayor Tom Leppert has declared Dalai Lama Day in Dallas. (The religious icon is being honored this week in Washington, I’m sure you’ve heard, angering Chinese officials because of the Tibetan issue.) An in-person appearance by the film’s director, documentarian/explorer Rick Ray, was even scheduled along with the Saturday screening. But yesterday, chief proponent Donna Collins reports, Victory Park officials abruptly canceled the event, citing a “double-booking.” The film’s proponents are muttering darkly about “Chinese influences” on the glitzy development; a Victory spokesman is researching the issue. Meantime, backers are stressing alternative showings of the flick this weekend, including at the Unity Church of Christianity on Greenville Avenue. Developing.
Update: Donna Collins reports just receiving a phone call from Victory Park, which told her the Dalai Lama flick would be shown there Saturday after all, as originally planned. Kristin Gray, a spokeswoman for the mixed-use development, tells us that Victory had been concerned about “capacity” issues, and merely “wanted to make sure there was enough room and space” to accommodate the event. Peace in our time!
