My wife and I went to lunch at Snider Plaza yesterday and were both surprised to see sandwich boards advertising Christmas Light carriage rides. I hereby declare the first week in October as way too early for anything Christmas-related. But then, I grew up in a household where we were forbidden from even saying the word “Christmas” until after Thanksgiving. On a related note, when did I turn into Andy Rooney?
Update: A fellow-Grinchy FrontBurnervian agrees that October is way too early, but a planning-ahead FrontBurnervian says she starts shopping in August (and that those carriage rides sell out every year). Ergo, I’ll open up comments for discussion. I hope, through sane, rational discourse, we can all agree upon an Official Opening Day for Christmas Season.
I think the standard is the Friday after Thanksgiving, but that doesn’t seem realistic anymore.
I was at Costco this weekend with my 6-year-old son, who noticed all the Christmas stuff out. His response? “Dad, it’s not even Halloween yet. Don’t these people know when Christmas is?”
You can make reservations for the carriage ride here (half of the December dates are already sold out):

I’m one of ‘those’ people who put on a large Christmas display each year. Truth of the matter is, I start planning my display in May or June each year.
Sure, I buy a ton of lights on discount after Christmas, but sometimes I run short. It’s a blessing to have stores putting lights on the shelves in September/October. Believe or not, this is ‘crunch’ time for me as I’m putting on the final touches of my display.
[...] Only a nauxparkie would make this observation. The carriage rides are a big freaking deal. Making your reservation marks the beginning of the fall season, not Christmas. Doesn’t he live on the other side of the highway anyway? Leave a Reply [...]
Christmas before Halloween is ridiculous, but until people quit buying things before Halloween, stores will have it out earlier and earlier. I went into Hallmark Saturday, and Christmas music was playing and the ornaments were out. I wanted to leave, but had to buy two birthday cards.
The Christmas season begins the morning after the first night the temperature drops below 40 degrees.
[...] Yesterday, I griped (and a handful of FrontBurnervians agreed) that the first week of October was way too early for Christmas-related anything. Today, the NYTimes picks up on the not-so-subtlety of early Christmas retail, including a JCPenney ad with a blurry Christmas tree in the background. [...]
