DOOR-TO-DOOR DINGBATS

Over at Dallas Morning Views, Rod Dreher writes about his adventures with an antagonistic security system salesman. He says you just shouldn’t open the door for solicitors. I agree. It drives my wife nuts, but I put up “No Soliciting” signs, because then it becomes a misdemeanor if they ring and pitch, should you choose to get snooty. When they do knock, I keep it short and not very sweet: “I don’t allow home soliciting. Sorry.” (Why I throw in “sorry,” I don’t know. I guess because it sounds more civilized than “Get the hell out of here.”) Then I close the door, no matter what they’re saying. That’s true whether or not they’re poor kids selling magazine subscriptions or old ladies selling bibles.
