RE: SKI FORT WORTH

What was once a “strong chance” has become much stronger. The man-made ski resort has a big announcement about a new location, concept, and name. As for the location, “Bearfire Resorts, LLC executives feel they have found an ideal location in a large piece of property situated midway between the Dallas and Fort Worth airports.” (Between the airports? Really?) As for the concept, there will be 650,000 square feet of skiable slopes in addition to a hotel, convention center, and spa. And I’m glad to see someone took my recommendation for a name change to heart: The Coolzone Winterplex will now be known as Bearfire Resort. (Much better.)

SIGNS OF INTELLIGENTLY DESIGNED LIFE AT SMU

Today’s editorial in The Daily Campus perfectly summarizes my thoughts on the silliness that is the “Intelligent Design” debate.

RE: GAP DESIGN EDITIONS

I just received the following information from a fashion-savvy male FrontBurnervian:

I was in a GAP this last week for the first time in maybe two years and I was shocked to find a Dries Van Noten knock-off jacket (I recognized it as I wear a ton of Dries) for $88.  Impressive.  And you bet you a__ I snapped it up like a shrimp nacho at a beer bust.  I had never before found something that was tailored and constructed-finished on par with this ever at GAP.  Once at Target last year.  Someone’s doing something smart with the re-directing coming from GAP corporate.  Banana R. was already a destination, but GAP was floundering big time in the sweats and tee wilderness. Thanks for the heads up info.  Not sure if the white shirt campaign is both sexes, but I’m going to the website.

Sorry guys, it’s actually just for women (or if you are a man who wears women’s clothes). However, if the trend to bring designer names to the masses continues (with all the success they have had it is very likely), I am sure a male campaign is in the works for the Gap. I will let you know when I know something.

HO HO HOLY COW IT’S VICE

It’s not going to be a happy ending for a number of massage establishments in Dallas today. Dallas Vice, along with the FBI, ICE, IRS and the Dallas County DA have been serving up warrants all over town. Jump for the money shot.

STAINLESS STEEL CHEF COMPETITION

Timmy boy, you’re in for a big surprise tomorrow night. I just got off the phone with fellow judge Shannon Shelmire Wynne and he’s got some tricks up his green sleeves for you. Ever tussled with Shermie? Hah, forget watching the chefs. This event just took a nice turn. Food fight!

GAP DESIGN EDITIONS

Yesterday, the Gap released a limited edition collection of new American designer takes on the classic white shirt. The Gap partnered with the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund to introduce up-and-coming young design talent such as Doo.Ri, Rodarte, and Thakoon (all 2006 CFDA winners) to a broader audience (following in the footsteps of stores like Target and H&M). But, hurry, the pieces (which range in price from $68-$88 – far below designer prices) are selling fast, and they are only available online (already sold out of all of small sizes) or locally at the Gap locations at NorthPark and the Galleria.

RE: KATIES AND PRESS CLUB

Whoa there, pardner. Just because Elizabeth Albanese and I happen to be going to Ibiza together next month, that doesn’t mean my Katie Award is tainted. I’m a good journalist, man. To prove it, here are the minutes from the March 26 meeting of the Press Club board and foundation — along with my comments:

Update: In the below snark, I made a joke about why Durhl Caussey resigned. Rand LaVonn has since told me: “Speaking only for myself, it should be noted the Durhl Caussey is one of the heroes in this situation. Caussey is the ONLY person in the Club who had the courage to confront the then-president about her spending. He went into a packed meeting knowing most of the Board members were against him and he laid out the facts. Caussey’s actions started the unraveling of the deception. When his participation became a distraction, he stepped aside. True journalists and people loyal to the Club should thank Durhl Caussey for his integrity and courage.”

DALLAS RANKS #3 FOR AFRICAN-AMERICANS

We’re behind only Atlanta and Washington, D.C., according to this report from Black Enterprise. The write-up on our fair city after the break:

RE: LEADING OFF (TXU ITEM)

I love one pit bull and only one pit bull: “Yes, I’m a Raging” Mitch Schnurman. In his latest column, he says we’re giving TXU a free pass on the buyout being offered them, and we shouldn’t.

RE: LEADING OFF (LARRY WRIGHT ITEM)

A Texas Monthly-editing FBvian reminds me that Lawrence “If Loving You Is Wrong, I Don’t Wanna Be” Wright penned the November 1988 cover story for D, “Did Dallas Kill Kennedy?” (It was an excerpt of his book, In the New World.) Says our friend, “It’s one of the best assessments of Dallas that I’ve read. Tremendous work.” So read it. Go.

RE: 2006 KATIES: A CALL FOR RESUBMISSION

rod_thumb.jpgA media-working FBvian sends in his vote:

WHY DALLAS LEADS IN DNA EXONERATIONS

Here’s an update on the Innocence Project by Matthew Wright over at the Texas Observer blog. At a party last night celebrating our Best Lawyers (coming in the May issue), the point was made to me that the reason Dallas is the center of activity in clearing cases is that our DA’s office is one of the few in the country–maybe the only in the country–that as a matter of policy preserves evidence for 25 years. The others toss it after the case is won and appeals are over. So if you were wrongly convicted in Houston or San Diego or Phoenix, tough luck.

2006 KATIES: A CALL FOR RESUBMISSION

Good for Glenn Hunter. The PR-heavy and possibly crony-laden Katies have needed a serious overhaul for many years, but the 2006 awards, well-chronicled by the Dallas Business Journal, clearly make the entire process bogus. The Press Club is trying to sort out the extent of the irregularities, but one thing is certain. The 2006 awards should be thrown out lock stock and statue.

Either scrap them completely–no awards for that year at all–or resubmit all entries to a new, and actual, judging committee from a respected journalism department. Not even an asterisk  by the 2006 awards can remove the taint unfairly and unfortunately now covering them.

Even that may not be the end of it: Wick says the club should be shuttered, if it is not already dead. Tim (who won a 2006 Katie) will follow with supporting evidence that your eyes should definitely read.

GLENN HUNTER RESIGNS FROM DALLAS PRESS CLUB

If you’re playing catch-up, here’s the back story. In short, the Press Club is unraveling. Yesterday, Glenn Hunter, editor of the Dallas Business Journal, resigned from the PC board. Since his paper is still working the story about the troubles in that organization, Hunter declined to comment on why he quit. But my guess — and this really is a guess — is that he’s simply fed up.
