MY NEXT JOB

News publisher Jim Moroney has decided to create the position of president and GM of the DMN, because, among other reasons, he hopes to “alleviate some of the decision-making congestion in my office.” Dude, I can totally do that.

The full memo, forwarded by a concerned FBvian:

> From: Moroney, James III
> Sent: Tuesday, March 28, 2006 2:23 PM
> To: Everyone - Al Dia; Everyone - Denton RC; Everyone - DFW; Everyone -
> Quick; Everyone - TDMN; TDMN-Plano (North Plant)
> Subject: Announcement
>
> I wanted to let you know that I have decided to create the position of
> President and General Manager of The Dallas Morning News. Presently, I am
> interviewing candidates for this position.
>
> As all of you know, we are a company of over 2,000 full time employees.
> We operate six distinct companies, each with its own profit and loss
> responsibility:
>
> * The Dallas Morning News
> * The Denton Record Chronicle
> * Al Dia
> * Quick
> * D/FW Printing Company
> * Design Mail, Inc.
>
> In addition, we operate the websites of our publications. Add in our
> array of niche products, like F!D Luxe, Neighbors, Looks, In and others
> and what you have is a fairly complicated and certainly very demanding
> operation. Moreover, since I took this job in mid-2001, the scope of
> responsibilities has increased to include Al Dia, Quick and all of our
> publications’ websites.
>
> We are in a challenging time for the traditional newspaper business.
> Anytime the competitive business environment in which you operate is
> rapidly changing, you must be certain that your organizational structure
> gives you the opportunity you need to make good decisions more quickly and
> to execute those decisions excellently. The addition of a President and
> General Manager to our organization will help alleviate some of the
> decision making congestion in my office, thereby providing us the
> opportunity to move the organization forward at a faster pace and with
> improved execution.
>
> The News and Editorial Departments will continue to report directly to me
> through Bob Mong. The VP-Interactive for The Dallas Morning News, another
> position for which I am presently interviewing candidates, will also
> report directly to me. All other departments and operating companies will
> report through the President and General Manager.
>
> I would like to hire this person as soon as possible, yet getting the
> right person for the job is the number one priority.
>

> Jim
