Despite some very miserable weather—yes, I know, we needed the rain—our girl about town, 6-year-old in tow, trekked to Fort Worth on Saturday. She started at the Kimbell, to see “Gauguin and Impressionism.” Then it was off to Casa Manana for the Emperor’s New Clothes. Thanks, Jenny. While you were out there getting some culture, most of us were in bed, watching—wait for it—Law & Order on Tivo.
I’m embarrassed it took me so long to see the Gauguin exhibit. And I am very sorry I went on a Saturday. It was packed, regardless of the hideous weather. The exhibit, however, is marvelous, and, as much as I thought I knew about both Impressionism and Gauguin, I learned an incredible amount. And I had always thought of him as that guy who painted the naked natives… After the museum, we went to see The Emperor’s New Clothes at Casa Mañana. What a groovy space. It’s got that Epcot, ’50s futuristic thing going, complete with golfball dome and reflective, space-age-looking material ceiling. And the shows are done in the half round. Anyway, the story has never been one of my favorites. I think it’s a little hard to translate to the stage and to kids. But the show had my 6-year-old’s full attention. The emperor was hilarious, and the costumes, especially his, were fabulous. I apologize for, once again, talking about something that is now closed. The good news is the season isn’t over yet. The After Schoolsical Special runs March 3–4; Peter Cottontail III runs March 24 - April 9; and Alice In Wonderland runs April 28-May 14.
